Do Catholic priests in other countries do their rounds to collect money and bless flats at the beginning of the year?
It's a thing here in Poland.

I don't think it's a thing back home in Germany, but I come from a very equal Catholic/Lutheran area and maybe it's different in other areas.

Anyway, we pretended to be a good Christian family again on the off-chance that the kids want to have first communion.

Isn't this similar to the Sternensinger in Germany? The butcher up my street (and several other houses) have the chalk marking that comes with giving a donation and some consider it a kind of blessing of the house. (I'm near Nuremberg.)

@fritzoids yeah, I'm from that area as well. The Sternsingers are the closest equivalent, but that doesn't include that judgemental intrusion into your home by someone who can decide to bar you from specific social functions

@kyonshi
ah. yes. agreed. I was focussing more on the blessing part.

are there more expectations than just donating? Like do you have to offer cookies and sherry (or similar)?

@fritzoids preparing candles and other stuff for the blessing. I'm actually not that firm on the whole thing as I'm not catholic anyway, my wife is

@kyonshi I've never heard of that happening here in the US, and I grew up amongst German-Catholics and married into a family of Mexican-Catholics.

@Tim_Eagon @kyonshi Oh, this is definitely a thing here in Croatia, but we aren't that geographically far away from Poland.

Two weeks ago, a priest arrived to our house and blessed all five of us (including both cats).

@Tim_Eagon @kyonshi Same here in the US, even in the relatively religious zone of NM where we have posadas that still isn't a thing.

@Longplay_Games @kyonshi Yeah, priests will come to your house to bless it if you ask, but it's not something I've seen done regularly.
