Ok so I’m completely in awe of how good healthcare is here compared to Island Health.

I need some medical imaging… got a requisition this morning.

In BC: I’d wait 6-9 months in silence for them to book an appointment for me on some random day in the future.

Here? I can call booking myself, pick the location, day and time… and they had availability TODAY.

I’m floored. People need to know how bad Island Health is in BC.

    @DiverDoc um… I’m in Alberta? I’ve had nothing but smooth sailing since arriving and transitioning my care.

    I’m not going to write a novel about how bad Island Health is — If interested, I recommend doing a quick google search.

    1. It’s the worst for simple walk in wait times by 2-3x the Canadian average.

    2. There is a 3-5 YEAR wait time for a family doctor in areas outside of Victoria.

    3. It’s normal to wait 6-9 months for routine imaging like ultrasound, 12 for CT/MRI.

    @britt Quite the same in Ontario (I live in Ottawa) like you experienced in BC with even more wait times. I had received phone calls between 9-12 months with absolutely no choice of location, day and time. I even had to refuse some because it was simply impossible for me to get there.

    @adelinej I feel you. The 6-9 months I was referring to was just for an ultrasound of any kind (not CT/MRI) , for those I’ve waited up to a year.

    I’m a ‘frequent flyer’, if I may. I understand the struggle and frustration of the system here — just wanting to celebrate a win where I can get one. :)

    karlpybara,

    @britt can I asked where you moved to?👀 I'm living in Quebec and my situation is basically what you described for BC😖

    @karlpybara for sure! We moved to Edmonton - so far everything has been excellent for both of us --- and our family has had great experiences in general here.

    I'm happy to update/answer questions down the line too if you want - DMs always open and welcome. :)

    Oh - and I'm really sorry things in Quebec are rough... truly, it's an aweful thing to have to experience.

    @draeh I’m American, I feel you.

    @britt

    Shitty that you had to move to find that but it must be such a relief to actually get basic healthcare

    @stephaniepixie the biggest relief. I knew I was being traumatized out there but my goodness — I didn’t know how bad.

    Everyone deserves basic healthcare like this. ❤️🤗

    *context: I moved provinces in Canada. We have free healthcare but it’s regulated and managed by each province. It can be drastically different depending on where you live in any province.

    I moved from a semi rural area with limited resources to a large major capital city.

    deantoir_ceardaiochta,

    @britt wow that's amazing. It'll make a real difference for patient outcomes having that sort of access. Glad your new area health body is on the ball.
    The health services in Ireland are a bit of a dumpster fire right now. the center/right civil war parties have been running it down for decades, creating an awful 2 tier system and are resisting nationalised single tier system.

    Willamthewisp,

    @britt As someone who recently moved to BC from elsewhere, oh no. But also happy for you!

    @Willamthewisp Not all of BC is awful 🤗 Just the area we were in was particularly struggling mightily.

    I hope you enjoy your new home!
