micahflee,

Billionaires shouldn't exist. That said, Taylor Swift really seems to be one of the world's least-shitty billionaires

@micahflee superstardom is maybe the least exploitative way to become mega-rich, since the basis is "fans offering money for what they love", and the richness scales by number of fans and human population. Becoming mega-rich has an unfortunate tendency to nudge your life into bad choices, it's hard to avoid that. Superstars will become even more super weird if human population ever reaches 1 trillion

aemaeth,

@micahflee how about Futos CEO? He seems like a really swell man!

@micahflee And she didn't start with a small multi million dollar loan from her parents or grandparents.

@bartvdpoel @micahflee her parents are literally ex-finance fund managers and she went to elite private schools / was funded as an artist. so uhh yeah she kind of did?

ETA: I'm not commenting on her as a person, good or bad, but if you think she didn't have ten legs up because of generational money, you're crazy

@lewdmachines @micahflee Sorry "lewdmachine". I'm starting to transform into a Swifty, wich is akward for a 51 year old man.

@bartvdpoel @micahflee I think it would be .. well, naive in the extreme to think that the child of 0.01%-ers becoming a billionaire was just a matter of talent, and that the world of opportunities that her birth zip code afforded her played no significant role

She's talented, no doubt, but this "she's a self made billionaire, t'was her bootstraps" vibe is nonsense

@lewdmachines @bartvdpoel @micahflee

Yea, it’s a pretty simple concept. Talented etc? Sure … of those with the means and foundations to make it big.

And it’s how the privileged but also relatively successful fail to see their privilege, they compare themselves to their bubble not noticing how exclusive success is to the bubble itself.

In this case, from outside the “bubble”, looking at the very distant superstars, it’s easy to not see how we could never be a superstar.

Couldn’t help but quickly check the Wikipedia … and the quickly found this:

In 2003, Swift and her parents started working with New York–based talent manager Dan Dymtrow. With his help, Swift modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch as part of their "Rising Stars" campaign, had an original song included on a Maybelline compilation CD, and met with major record labels.

She’s 14 there and parents are getting her a manager.
