atomicpoet,

You know what’s funny? Yesterday, someone was telling me that CDs are obsolete because of Spotify.

Well, I don’t have Internet at home for the next two days. Even if I wanted it, there’s no Spotify for me.

You know how terrible the next few days would be without physical media? You never thought about that possibility, did you?

@atomicpoet I am all in favor of physical media but in short emergencies like yours, you can download all your playlists for offline listening for a couple of days

atomicpoet,

@gianlucafiore I have 64GB of storage on my phone. I’m not filling it with music.

@atomicpoet Is life without media so terrible? Our ancestors sang and danced. My best guess is that having all the music in the world at our fingertips doesn't make us happier than having folk dances and ancestral songs.

atomicpoet,

@travisfw I can’t play piano or guitar. I also don’t have the budget to hire singers and dancers to entertain me.

@atomicpoet You would if you hadn't spent all that money on copyrighted IP.
Edit: not serious. Seriously: you would if you lived at that time.

mikedev,

Have a bicycle?

atomicpoet,

@mikedev Such a classic moment!

@atomicpoet that's such an odd thing to say. Spotify is more analogous to radio. The modern replacement for CDs would be audio files. Spotify premium lets you cache the files for offline use, but that is not the same. There's no real old analog to that because it's dumb and weird and should go away. Stream capture is like tape recording radio except not enough people do it.

@atomicpoet uhhh...there's a nice middle ground. You can have a LAN with a music server.

atomicpoet,

@qkslvrwolf True, but having done that in the past, you better make a back-up if your server gives up the ghost.

@qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I pay backblaze a moderate sum to hold encrypted backups, my nas has good redundancy, and because I'm a nerd, I have redundant old network gear around the house in case of a short term failure.

atomicpoet,

@qkslvrwolf Again, good if you have home Internet. I don’t have home Internet.

qkslvrwolf,
@qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I mean, I think the chances of your server dying while your internet is out is...slim? Considering I've never had a home server fully die in 20 years of running one.

atomicpoet,

@qkslvrwolf I’ve had my home server die. I’ve learned since then to always prepare for the worst circumstance. Redundancies keep you safe.

pkboi,

@atomicpoet Just as well I hung into those 1,000+ LPs! Perfect back up, and you can read the liner notes.
