Is Nvidia + Btrfs too much of a bleeding-edge config still?

Asking from the pov of somebody who ran ReiserFS + a self-compiled fglrx module back in the day (2000s)

@visone I have heard plenty of horror stories about loss of data with btrfs though. It seems like it has improved a lot in the last 3-4 years, I am going to try it :)

If it comes back with further issues, it is me.

You know what’s funny? Yesterday, someone was telling me that CDs are obsolete because of Spotify.

Well, I don’t have Internet at home for the next two days. Even if I wanted it, there’s no Spotify for me.

You know how terrible the next few days would be without physical media? You never thought about that possibility, did you?

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@atomicpoet I am all in favor of physical media but in short emergencies like yours, you can download all your playlists for offline listening for a couple of days

President Zelensky said today that Ukraine cannot allow a stalemate or frozen conflict, or else the nation risks the fight lasting for generations. He warned that the war will resume eventually if Russia isn’t “put in its place” now.

https://ru.interfax.com.ua/news/general/947898.html

The maximalist victory definition (short of delusions about dismembering Russia) is the restoration of the 1991–2014 borders, but I’ve always wondered about the logic here: how does this feat of “putting Russia in its place” make Ukraine safe forever more?

The sad truth is that, even if Ukraine wins its wildest victory possible, the country will remain threatened by Russia and forced to “raise grandchildren to fight.” I understand that this is a less inspiring story for Zelensky to tell from the podium, but still.

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@kevinrothrock Putin is old, he will be in charge for 5-10 more years. The dream scenario for Ukraine involve his dismissal (by God or others) and a new government that is not as willing as him to spend enormous resources against NATO and Ukraine.
A less war-bent dictator after Putin is not an impossibility.

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@kevinrothrock It may well be, I am not an expert on Russia and russian mentality. But that leaves us, as in NATO, with only the possibilities of attacking first or waiting to get attacked, eventually.
And looking at history, is never a good idea to bid time for those who have a military advantage

@Likewise @bookstodon I would assume it is probably an ok book, very rarely a good and certainly not a great one.
If it is of a genre that I usually read, I would probably read a few other reviews on Goodreads to decide if I want to read it or not. Otherwise I would be just happy that somebody read one book and discard their opinion of it.

@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

Whenever I look at today's I am left baffled at their popularity. To me they only offer 2 features more than 20 years ago's mechanical keyboards: bluetooth and LEDs. The latter I do not need, the former only occasionally. And yet these keyboards cost 15/20/30 times more than a perfectly fine Samsung or Logitech equivalent of early 2000s

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

with the price of a custom keycap I would have bought a whole keyboard. I mean, it is neat to have the chance but I would pay cents, not tens of euros for a tiny piece of plastic.
“but you can have your keyboard in pink or rose gold"
Sure, let me give you 5€ for a custom colour, not damn 50€ or more...

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@AAMfP @rekiwi I do love better ergonomics, no questions. And love to support small businesses and artisans over large companies whenever possible. But ergonomic keyboards exist since decades (Logitech made those split keyboards already in the 90s), and they cost orders of magnitude less than today.
A 300€ keyboard is an unthinkable purchase for me. It should have way more perks than being ergonomical and with swappable keys to justify it

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@AAMfP @rekiwi insane, right? It is like the industry decided that good keyboards cannot be had anymore for less than 150-200€, take or leave.

gianlucafiore,

@justinling Gaza is not Iraq. Gaza is like an hypotetical Afghanistan where the population voted and supported Al-Qaeda.
Please tell me how do you reason with that?

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@justinling every country, democratic, is governed by relative majorities that form coalitions to become absolute, so I do not see your point about the plurality.

And nonetheless, every country takes responsibilities for their elected, Russia with Putin, USA with Trump, Israel with Netanyahu. Thus I see no reason to remove any blame from Palestinians for Hamas. Their election was the key event that caused what we are seeing, so it skews things NOT to consider it.

The worst thing about online learning is that everything has become a video. Every code tutorial. Every design tutorial. Nobody actually writes out a guide anymore.

It's just "hey guys welcome to my tutorial" and watching 10 minutes of content that mostly isn't relevant...

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@Daojoan I admite being biased here, but if something is not written somewhere, it does not exist to me. Videos are unreferrable, unlinkable outside of their whole, and unsearchable.

One of the most frustrating aspects of learning about European history is that, while the conquest of Asia by European powers is celebrated, the conquest of Europe by Asian powers is so glossed over that most people don’t even know it happened many times.

Where were the Scythians from? The northern Middle East and Caucasus.

Where were the Sarmatians from? The Ural Mountains in modern Russia and Kazakhstan.

Where were the Huns from? East Asia, where they were known as the Xiongnu by the Chinese.

Where did the Avars come from? The Pontic-Caspian steppe in Asia.

Where were the Bulgars from? Central Asia, in what is now Kazakhstan.

Where did the Magyars come from? Western Siberia, also near the Ural Mountains.

Where were the Mongols from? Obviously, Mongolia—but people don’t realize the Mongols conquered a huge chunk of Europe.

Where were the Turks originally from? Central Asia—where several Turkic peoples—including the Uighurs, who live in China—live today.

These aren’t the only examples of Asian peoples conquering Europe. It happened over and over again through multiple millennia. But for some reason, most Europeans are completely unaware of this history.

When Europeans do know about this, they dismiss these Asian peoples as “barbarians”. But that can’t be further from the truth. In the so-called “Dark Ages”, the most prosperous and learned parts of Europe were under the control of Asian conquerors.

A good example is Khazaria, which was a bustling hub of culture during the 7th century.

Of course, the Arab influence on southern Europe is also notable. Not enough people know that Spain, Malta, and Sicily were once conquered by Arabs. And many European intellectuals, such as Averroës and Maimonides, spoke Arabic.

Europe, and European culture, has always been influenced by Asian peoples.

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@atomicpoet
Arabs conquests and the barbarian invasions are very well known facts in most Europe. They are part of the standard school curriculum. If people do not remember them is not because they have been obscured or willingly ignored.
Besides, most of the populations you name had very little impact on the history and culture of Europe, let's be honest here.

Regularly only football. Meaning at least one match a week.
Then the Olympics, as many sports as I manage to take the time to watch. Occasionally also a match-event of tennis, rugby, and F1.

I would have voted centre-left, if I could.

Hey #AskFedi,

Is anyone out there using FOSS for accounting?

I'm struggling with Quickbooks desktop (which you can only get as a subscription now, unless you pay four figures for an enterprise license).

#Xero comes highly recommended to me, but I'm loathe to go "#cloud" for accounting. Very loathe indeed.

I am using with profit with as webui. The former is CLI only but with the latter it comes a web interface, with a simpler UI for generating reports. All Python-based, if it helps.

gianlucafiore,
@gianlucafiore@metalhead.club avatar

@RL_Dane
Beancount/ledger are just plaintext files and fava integrates a webserver. I usually edit the files with vim and launch fava to see stats and reports in the browser. There is no infrastructure to host it all other than the cli apps and python.
If it helps, take a look at my repo with the files and how I organized it all https://github.com/Donearm/ledger

    Worth adding that apolitical means in some cases "I do not have any local party that represents my ideas".
    Personally I am apolitical in this sense, not being affiliated nor believing in any political parties as where I live(d) (Italy and Poland) there is no credible socialist party. I do vote though, but not believing it makes much of a difference.
