a bad design pattern I'm seeing more and more sites/apps use - overly aggressive notifications and emails to "remind" you about a deal or something you were browsing for on their site - no matter the specifics.

So, for example, last night I looked up hotel options for a friend's wedding in JUNE to see which hotels one chain I have status with has in the city. Since the details of the wedding reception etc aren't yet sent out, not ready to book. But today I've gotten an email and a notification

it isn't surprising or even sketchy that they can push notifications to my phone or send me email as I was logged in to their frequent guest account when I searched (checking how much different hotels were with points) and their app can send me notifications because it is used when actually staying for digital keys/notification that your room is ready etc.

But such aggressive pushes should, IMHO, be adjusted by the time and urgency (a June booking isn't urgent in early Feb)

@Rycaut eventually app makers will have to distinguish Marketing from Transactional notifications, as with emails+texts+robocalls, and have 2 separate opt-ins.
But they probably won't until the app-stores force them.

@billseitz yes that would be helpful. There are plenty of apps where I in fact want transactional notificiations (travel apps about in progress travel/hotel stays, restaurant apps about an order or reservation etc)

But their marketing notifications can get abusive and overdone. And quieting all notifications is a crude and easily forgotten step when actually traveling…

ipsquiggle,

@Rycaut I feel like there's this big lack of humility in the tech world, every app and service seems to operate on the model that they are literally the only thing you're doing, the only thing you're subscribed to, the only thing you care about, and then they operate accordingly. Like the whole of silicon valley is a bunch of 5 year olds standing on the dinner table saying "HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT ME!" And, as expected, they really don't have anything to say and are just clamoring for attention. 😂

@ipsquiggle yes this is deeper than just tech - it is also true that most non-tech companies assume that you are as deeply aware of the finest nuances of their products as they are and actually understand the difference between say Engage and Engage+ trim levels of a vehicle for example (in the case I'm thinking of Engage is the lowest end version of the vehicle while Engage+ is $10K more and costs more than the highest end version - why - I have no clue)
