@timrichards Surely if airport rail is just a small part of giant rail loop around Melbourne (that's 100% going to be built), standard Zone 2 fares will be applicable. In the meantime, I have previously taken the 901 bus and Metro (change at Broadmeadows) to spite Skybus.
@ariaflame@timrichards Using a transit card it’s $4.08 to get from anywhere in the Perth metro area to the airport as a full fare adult. I think it’s $5.10 if you pay cash. No airport surcharge 😎
@timrichards Did you know there’s a way to do it rather cheaper - on a bus as well? I found this blog post. Quite well-written. Worth a read if you didn’t know. Mind, it’s from 2019 so things might have changed. I’m sure the writer will be updating it if that’s the case, he seems a decent enough bloke. I bet the travel writing community in Melbourne is small enough that you know him, etc http://aerohaveno.blogspot.com/2019/03/to-melbourne-airport-cheap-arse-way.html
@timrichards air port train probably going to be $30.- one way.
Take train to Broadmeadows then 901 bus to airport for $5³⁰ (or $3⁶⁶ with $11.- top-up 3 trip ➡️ delete 🔄)
@timrichards a) partly held up by the private airport owners insisting that the government pay for the station be built underground at twice the cost, b) partly delayed by the government having to find a rail alignment that isn't going to result in the airport rail link more or less instantly going into administration (I'm looking at you, Brisbane) because the construction cost results in a link that is uneconomic from day one, c) price and time to CBD is competitive with Brisbane and Sydney.
But yes, a rail connection would be nice a decade ago.
@MrAndrewD I do think an underground station is best, however. Good connections, out of the weather. I'd make the airport pay a big chunk of it though!
