Three years ago, my wife bought a Meta Quest 2 VR set.

We played Beat Saber and Race the Sun. Both were good games. But other than that, the thing gathers dust.

My biggest issue is the motion sickness. I can only last so long before I need to lie down and let the nausea pass. But also, the headset is heavy and the battery only lasts for two hours.

Which is a shame because I bought a big library of VR games on Steam, most which are still unplayed.

And this brings me to why I won’t buy the Apple Vision Pro: not only is it expensive, but I doubt there will ever be a nice library of games on it.

nazgul,

@atomicpoet @atomicpoet I can only play the games where I’m physically moving with the camera. Table Tennis is excellent because you don’t need physical feedback. The exercise apps (Supernatural) are useful. Anything else gives me vertigo.

@atomicpoet Pretty much the same experience here. The Quest 2 is fun, but quite niche. After about 30 minutes, I have to take it off. It's also very much a one-person-experience and feels isolating, which I think is detrimental to widespread adoption. And this also applies to Vision Pro.

@toon Where I live, quite a few VR arcades have popped up. They’re quite fun, and can be a communal experience in that setting.

This, by the way, is why I prefer the Valve Index: walking around on a plane can be quite fun.

Also, when you’re at an arcade, people who aren’t playing can see what you’re doing because there’s an external monitor that’s displaying the action.

But at home, I don’t want to interact with people when I’m gaming.

The next time I get a VR headset, it will probably be the Valve Index.

I’ve used it before, and it was an overall good experience because it’s got an external camera that tracks your movements. I also found it comfortable and didn’t give me as much motion sickness.

But also, I think the main application for VR should be video games. I don’t care about “being social” when I’m using VR unless I’m doing competitive play. And I definitely don’t want to meet people on Zoom.

@atomicpoet One further thing: whenever a new tech thing trends on the Fediverse, people go out of their way to hate on it because it’s new and shiny.

But VR has been a thing for a long, long time. We know what it’s about and society has not collapsed.

There’s already thousands of VR games available on Steam. Many of them are dirt cheap. I have yet to meet anyone who’s “lost” themselves in VR.

@atomicpoet it's very hard to compare both of them, they don't target the same userbase and the price gap doesn't make sense to compare.

For the quest issue, you can't do much about motion sickness aside of looking in the game settings for qol options regarding that.
For the weight it's still light but usually has issues with weight reparation, you could fix that with additional weight.

For the battery life, you have third party accessories, and some even go in the back to fix the weight issue.

If that could help you come back to the vr world

@spokeek No doubt the userbase is quite different. I get the feeling the majority of people buying the Vision Pro are simply Apple fans who like the status of being early adopters. To them, it’s less about what the Vision Pro does and more about being seen with a Vision Pro.

I have no doubt that it is probably intuitive to use, much like many Apple devices. But my own preference for VR is for gaming.
