Richard Dawkins recently made headlines by claiming to be a “cultural Christian.” What he actually meant, in my opinion as a fellow cultural Christian, was that he’s a bigot https://skepchick.org/2024/04/richard-dawkins-cultural-christian-or-supremacist-bigot/

toon,
@toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

@alda @rebeccawatson He wasn't always like that, though, was he? For me The God Delusion was the main letdown and just a book full of vitriol and spite, without any insight. Dawkins was great when he was popularizing science and zoology. The Ancestor's Tale is still one of my favourite books. Seems like either he turned 'angry old white man' in the 90s or he just didn't let it show before.

De-federating does NOT prevent from accessing your public feed.

This is demonstrably false. Almost all servers that de-federate Threads still broadcast the RSS feed of your posts. This is available to everyone, even servers that are de-federated from yours.

If you don’t believe me, test this out for yourself. Append “.rss” to the end of your profile URL (exampleserver.com/@username.rss), and see what happens.

Hell, if I wanted to build a search engine for the Fediverse and not use ActivityPub, I could use RSS instead and I could index most of the Fediverse – whether you opt into it or not.

Let’s stop spreading the myth that de-federation by itself prevents Threads from accessing your public feed.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews But does it prevent them from doing so legally? I can create searchable indexes of lots of things I find online, but that's often a copyright violation.

    @jpmens ran into that the other day 🤦‍♂️. I think some json libraries use integer values for storing boolean values as json?

    toon,
    @toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

    @jpmens yeah, that's my point. I think it is more rubust to store booleans as ints if boolean is not supported, but python (i think you're using json.dumps?) thinks otherwise.

    Three years ago, my wife bought a Meta Quest 2 VR set.

    We played Beat Saber and Race the Sun. Both were good games. But other than that, the thing gathers dust.

    My biggest issue is the motion sickness. I can only last so long before I need to lie down and let the nausea pass. But also, the headset is heavy and the battery only lasts for two hours.

    Which is a shame because I bought a big library of VR games on Steam, most which are still unplayed.

    And this brings me to why I won’t buy the Apple Vision Pro: not only is it expensive, but I doubt there will ever be a nice library of games on it.

    toon,
    @toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

    @atomicpoet Pretty much the same experience here. The Quest 2 is fun, but quite niche. After about 30 minutes, I have to take it off. It's also very much a one-person-experience and feels isolating, which I think is detrimental to widespread adoption. And this also applies to Vision Pro.

    Spotify destroyed artists' incomes.

    If we commodify books in the same way, we will bankrupt authors. And 99% make next to nothing as it is.

    Just join your local library, folks. Don't ask for new ways for creators to get screwed.

    toon,
    @toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

    @Daojoan the music industry destroyed artists' incomes by sticking to obsolete formats way too long, thus allowing others to eat their lunch, and they then blamed that on 'piracy'. I remember when we had to buy full albums at €20 a pop for just one or two songs we actually wanted to hear. I'm no fan of Spotify, but they did not destroy musicians' incomes.

    I'm all for criticising and , but this post is seriously misleading.

    The data described in the privacy policy is what is necessary to federate comments. Whether this implies they can then use this data for other purposes is still up for debate.

    Doing so would likely be illegal in the EU though.

    So, the hubs and I have a one of the long term couple debates about when is the best time to shower.

    For me, a shower is calming and relaxing, so I tend to do it in the evening or before bed.

    He says it's refreshing and energizing, so it helps him wake up, and get going in the morning.

    How about y'all, is it relaxing, refreshing, something in between, or something different entirely? When do you normally do it? Have you always done it the same or have you changed over the years?

    toon,
    @toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

    @RickiTarr I shower in the morning, but I could switch to evening, no problem. I wouldn't think of a shower as energizing or relaxing, though, just as something you do to get clean. But being clean feels nice. And if you've been out in the cold or in a bad rainstorm, a shower can be really soothing.

    opinion: it should be forbidden to use the word 'buy' for anything that is a time-limited license.

    If your business model is paying every month/year, the word to use is 'rent'

    You're not buying a domain and you're not buying a software license (that has to be renewed every x time)

    toon,
    @toon@toonvandeputte.be avatar

    @peturdainn I think the legal distinction between owning and renting is relevant. Renting is much more limited, owning gives you full control. Which, in the case of domain names at least, is definitely the case. For software, it's a mixed bag.
