That Stone Roses track is one of the first singles I bought with my own money. Dunno why. Guess I had some cash and I’d heard of them.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Lovely Erasure. Why they’ve never had a Mamma Mia-style musical is beyond me.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Before I Google it, was Think Twice written by Diane Warren or Jim Steinman? I’m saying Warren.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Surprisingly, neither. It was Andy Hill, winner of Eurovision as the writer of Making Your Mind Up. Astonishing.

I won’t lie; Mariah banging out All I Want For Christmas in June is something of a headfuck.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Fair play though, All I Want For Christmas is a banger at any time.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I really hated the Power Rangers. I did not get it at all. I was made to take my little brother to the cinema to watch the first movie. This is giving me ‘Nam-style flashbacks.

I’ve always loved how Stay Another Day has become a bona fide member of the Christmas Songs club, simply by virtue of its winter release, a few sleigh bells edited in after the fact, and a slew of fluffy parkas in the video.

Other than that, it’s very not a Christmas song.

Ah, popular Irish musician, Pat O’Banton.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy : The sound of every fair ground ever since it’s initial release.

For the five years after it came out, you were more or less guaranteed to hear it while some skinny topless nipper in scuffed brogues defied gravity and spun you around on the Waltzer.

@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I had completely blanked out this Whigfield track until now.

Cheap as shit that it basically nicks, well, everything from Saturday Night.

14yo me had a lot of time for her though. Not her music, mind.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I have no regrets in saying that I hated Pj & Duncan long before it was popular.

It probably didn’t help that I never watched a single minute of Byker Grove.

This track is dog shit though.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

This episode falls smack into the path of me learning to be a smug metal head, who wanted absolutely nothing to do with any of this “manufactured pop shit”.

I was such a cunt.

Still am, to be fair.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

My ex-wife was a HUGE fan of Boyzone, so as a result I reject them with every fibre of my being.

Poor Stephen Gately though.

That said, Keith was on a podcast I listened to a while back, and he’s sound as shit.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Oh, Estefan…

thinks things

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Did she just threaten us with Jimmy Nail? Pretty sure that's a war crime.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I have absolutely no recollection of this track. Nothing at all.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

This saxophone is pure Million Love Songs, which was a much better track, despite involving Gary Barlow.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I won't lie, folks, this episode of is a zillion miles away from vintage.

Christ. Who the fuck was the target audience in 1994 for Cliff Richard and Phil Everly doing a duet?

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I still maintain that if the TV show this came from was broadcast on ITV, this track would never have made it anywhere near the charts.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Good old East 17, and their unbuttoned waistcoats as reasonable clothing choice.

Truly the bad boys of British pop.

😐

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Is that Mike Read (Radio One, not Eastenders) playing sax for Phil?

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

This is an undeniably great tune, but fuck me does it give me flashbacks to being at the ex-inlaws on a Saturday evening, while The Glitz Mix plays on Wave 105 and my ex and her mum are drinking low quality white wine.

Not Odyssey's fault, to be fair.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

It's really weird looking back on Legs & Co from this vantage point, where every song that gets released gets some form of video produced for it.

But at this point, the producers really did think it was better to have young women prancing about in small clothes.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Oh christ, 'How 'Bout Us' is the archetypal Late Night Love track.

close mic

whispers

"...and that was for Angie in Totton. Phil says he's very sorry and would really love you to put the knife down. So why don't you do that Angie?

Now, the news..."

I do enjoy the performances where the singer resolutely refuses to pretend that they're actually singing.

I remember being a kid, and my dad criticising the show because "the songs aren't even played live". I took that at face value at the time, and agreed. But now I think that's a load of old bollocks. Live performances would have sucked.

White pianos: Not even once.

If you want to buy a white piano, ask yourself whether Donald Trump would have one. Yes, he would.

This is not a good Top 10. Not good at all.

DJDarren,

For many years I thought Smokey Robinson was a woman. I never saw him on the TV, just heard him on the radio.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Right, this has been excellent fun, but I have other things to which I must attend.

Another time, Poppers!
