This may be the final ever upgrade for ol’faithful Sandy Bridge rig. 16GB isn’t cutting it anymore, and for $50 delivered I won’t be too mad if it doesn’t work.

godnojoe,
@godnojoe@mastodon.social avatar

@jpm Never heard of this brand but for that price I guess it’s ok 😆

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@godnojoe exactly, it’s an AliExpress special, possibly using reclaimed memory chips…

Looks good so far

PASS

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

Now to find exactly which USB device is fucking over the keyboard on a different port…

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

Uhhh… now the problem has gone away

Kels_316,
@Kels_316@aus.social avatar

@jpm yay

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

Oh good* the problem hasn’t gone away!

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

Right, it’s still one of those two monitors fucking things over in USB-land.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

It is not one of the monitors. It’s… something else, and it only happens after a full boot into windows?

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@jpm is it USB hub stacking? They can only go 7 deep and it has other limitations too

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Taco_lad I don’t think it is. It’s a really weird one.

Keyboard doesn’t work from power-on until windows loads, so can’t enter bios etc. and sometimes doesn’t work after windows loads until it’s unplugged and replugged. Keyboard is plugged into its own dedicated USB2 socket on the motherboard, no hubs etc in the way.

I had everything except the keyboard unplugged, and it worked fine. So it’s something else plugged in at the same time that’s hosing USB across multiple ports.

sortius,
@sortius@mstdn.social avatar

@jpm @Taco_lad It could be a few things. Overpowered device smashing the USB controller, a weird bios setting that's gone awry, or a faulty USB controller.

Best way to tell is to do a CMOS clear. Wipe it out completely with the Jumper. It should tell you if it's hardware or a setting

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@sortius @Taco_lad yeah I tried that, but individually plugging devices in seems to cause the issue to appear and/or disappear. I seem to have a suspect now though, it could be a dodgy cable on another port of all things…

Note to self, remember there’s USB2 hubs inside every few USB3 sockets because USB2 and USB3 signals are completely separate.

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@jpm @sortius we have a really dumb one that hits at work, because the monitor is connected to the dock via usb3 and then to a laptop via usb-c, and the monitor has camera, speakers and mic as well as a usb3 hub in it - turns out to stack over 7 deep if you plug it all in, and if you connect an audio jack mic/headset combo the kb/mouse plugged into the hub stop working.

That monitor/hub combo problem happened with multiple laptop brands

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@sortius @Taco_lad so it does turn out it’s something to do with the hub itself. Nothing plugged in, issue remains.

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@jpm @sortius waiiiit is it a thunderbolt enabled hub?

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Taco_lad @sortius it may, but unless USB3-A and USB3-MicroB (not USB-C) have both somehow grown Thunderbolt support, and this Ivy Bridge vintage motherboard has too, then I don’t think that’s the problem.

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@jpm @sortius so it's not safeboot doing it.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

It does appear to be related to my USB3 hub. Good thing I’m not really using it…

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@jpm brave putting “yongxinsheng" RAM in a computer you care about, haha

grissallia,
@grissallia@aus.social avatar

@decryption @jpm Sure, but it has a dragon on it!

georgeharito,
@georgeharito@mastodon.au avatar

@decryption @jpm akin to putting Linglong tyres on your car

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@decryption as I said, if it works it works and if it’s not stable I’ll rip it out again. For $50 for 32GB of DDR3 it’s worth a try to buy me another couple of months.

@jpm must be good, the manufacturer’s logo is just a straight-up tramp stamp
