SwiftOnSecurity,

The invention of the blue LED, one of the most difficult and important inventions ever – which allowed the white LED – is some of the craziest Chad shit I have ever heard about anything. This guy is pinnacle determination holy crap.

travislankow,

@SwiftOnSecurity his boss sounded like the epitome of what is often wrong with upper management.

Spartan_1986,

@SwiftOnSecurity Whether you like him or not you need to credit the creator when using their work for your own purposes.

NosirrahSec,

@SwiftOnSecurity I just watched this yesterday. It was amazing to hear him say, "I just did it I don't care if he told me not to."

Then sued the guy who only gave him fucking pennies for his efforts, won, and the loser still won't acknowledge his contributions to science.

Love every second of that story.

simonzerafa,

@SwiftOnSecurity

Steamboat Willy has an answer to this issue. Especially how the company treated the inventor 🤨

codinghorror,

@SwiftOnSecurity fucking blue LEDs though. It's like goddamn punji sticks right in my damn eye.

@SwiftOnSecurity "what does it do?"
"turns blue"

corsairmo,

@SwiftOnSecurity I watched this yesterday and was like "holy crap, this is the sort of thing SwiftOnSecurity would be all over". And here you are 😉♥️

Lee_Holmes,

@SwiftOnSecurity @SwiftOnSecurity Watching that is definitely on my to do list. Did you see his one about the SAT? https://infosec.exchange/

@SwiftOnSecurity yeah, it was a major breakthrough and it's a big deal.

the next frontier is solving the green gap problem. right now we don't have efficient semiconductors that have a bandgap with a wavelength in the range between green-yellow and red-amber.

if we can find one, we can stop building white lights that have such a strong blue peak, and make very high efficiency white lights that run the full gamut of the Planckian locus.

vandorb12,

@gsuberland @SwiftOnSecurity i don't doubt these words are real, but they honestly sound in my head something that came out of Star Trek

@vandorb12 @gsuberland @SwiftOnSecurity I think I understood everything except Planckian locus and I can make a stab at that.

Benaresh,

@ariaflame @vandorb12 @gsuberland @SwiftOnSecurity

It has to do with black body radiation. I kinda knew about this stuff since i saw a Display in Hardware store, but actually reading about it is wild.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@Benaresh @ariaflame @vandorb12 @SwiftOnSecurity yes. when you see terms like "2700K warm white" or "6500K cold white", those are temperatures in Kelvin and they refer to points on the Planckian locus, which is a line through a colour space that locates the light emitted by black-body radiation sources at those corresponding temperatures.

@gsuberland @Benaresh @vandorb12 @SwiftOnSecurity Yes, I'm familiar with black body radiation. One of the things that lead to quantum nature of particles being confirmed which is probably why planck is in there.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@ariaflame @Benaresh @vandorb12 @SwiftOnSecurity it's a direct reference to Planck's law, which describes the spectra of black body radiation sources. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planck%27s_law

the Planckian locus line is derived by integrating the function composition of Planck's law and the colour space's CMFs, over λ, at each temperature T.

scottley,

@SwiftOnSecurity isn't that fucking crazy? It seems like such a small achievement, but that is the difference between blinking network gear being the realm of possibility for LED lights to what we have now

ETA - it was the Nobel Prize in physics in 2014
