objectinspace,

Mastodon: The fediverse is great because anyone can use it and no one can control who posts what.

Other people: Wow, amazing! Let's connect it to other popular emerging social networks, like Threads--

Mastodon: NO.

Other people: Oh! Well, uh, okay. Well how about Bluesk--

Mastodon: you are blocked. Get behind me, Satan.

@objectinspace That is a bit hyperbolic. One thing that has crossed my mind though is, how interesting can people who felt burned by Xitter, and learned so little that they went to Treads or Bluesky, be? They went from one birdcage to another. They like being the product. Are they the same people who tried Mastodon and thought it was too complicated? I get that it adds volume and variety... I guess we'll see.

objectinspace,

@geos While I can't pier into anyone's mind, I have seen folks who left Mastodon for Bluesky (or post primarily on bluesky) express that posting to Mastodon is not as fun, in part due to the amount of replies from strangers that criticize them for not Mastodonning propperly. I take them at their word.

@objectinspace
Sure, that too, but geez going right back to a closet chud like Dorsey seems like a poor choice. I loved the comment about the Mastodon HOA - I thought it was hilarious. I think those people mean well, too. I think it is quaint quirk of our community, even when I get yelled at - I can see where not everyone would be as amused by it as I am.

objectinspace,

@geos Dorsey is a board member and he provided initial funding, but it isn't his alone and it is run by different people. I don't think making the debate about one particular person is very constructive.

Full disclosure: I have a bluesky account, but I don't use it. The posts there seem pretty banal, plus the UI is horrible.

But, there are people I like there, and I'm done convincing them to switch. If I can get their posts in my feed and interact, that is A++ for me. Same with Threads.

@objectinspace Yeah, I think Musk is an investor too in BS. I suspect it will go the same way, but I appreciate you want you connect. You should be able to opt in to that, and I assume if you were told you need to add a hashtag to do it you would be fine with that, and if your profile looked like a NASCAR jumpsuit in order to make all the connections you want it would be worth it because you want it. The technology isn't bad the implementation is inconsiderate.

objectinspace,

@geos I mean, the way you connect on mastodon right now is not opt-in. If you boost content from other instances, the assumption is that other people will want to see it, unless they opt out of following that particular person or instance. Why is Bluesky different? I don't think it's the users, or the content. It seems to be more about them not implementing activitypub. Which is not a thing they are going to do. And if they did, there'd be no need for a bridge.

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@objectinspace I just found the hubris of telling the entire population of Mastodon that they were opted-in to something and if they want out the have to put a stupid hashtag in their profile. I don't want his dumb hashtag in. my profile. Potentially 14 million peopke have to modify their profile so one guy can do his fun science project. It reeks of obliviousness and privilege. Also. I am not interested in doing anything to make Dorsey or Zuckerberg wealthier. I think they are viral turds.

objectinspace,

@geos That's a pretty negative spin. Bluesky has been working on federating for months, he's been working on his bridge for months. They've both released project updates regularly. The bridge is open source. Anyone is free to comment on any aspect of it at any time. And, if you want to block the bridge, you can. What changed, beyond that federation became more viable--on bluesky's end? What did the guy do Monday to get all that hate on Tuesday, and what should he have done instead?

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@objectinspace

  1. I don't want to be monitized.
  2. I don't want to modify my profile to prevent this. That sets a precedent, that every time I want to opt out of the next one I add a hashtag. Eventually, my profile will look like a NASCAR jumpsuit. I think the guy who wrote the bridge is genuinely enthusiastic, I think he is just oblivious, and did not read the room - typical tech hubris. I get it, I've done the same. If it were me I'd revise the rollout strategy.
objectinspace,

@geos I think this is fair. Why is it necessary to add a hashtag? Wouldn't blocking the bridge also prevent it from receiving any content from you?

objectinspace,

@geos There's the rub: if you like what he's doing then you'll like the bridge. If you are against enabling bluesky then you will be against the bridge. That doesn't mean he did something wrong in the process of enabling the bridge.

It seems to me like he is working to implement something that a lot of people want in a manor that is as thoughtful and collaborative as is feasible, and those who don't like it are people who are against the project full stop. Maybe I'm missing something, though.

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@objectinspace The only point I disagree with you on is, I don't think it was thoughtful. Thoughtful, would have been considering the positions of all stakeholders not just enthusiastic cheerleaders. Clearly, there is a vocal pool of unrnthusistic stakeholders who would have been easy to find to get their input. So it was thoughtless, not with malicious intent, but obliviousness. It happens with software rollouts all the time. So, almost normal for the industry.

objectinspace,

@geos What does that look like, though? "Hate, all you people who don't like me, don't like my project, and would like me to fall into an endless hole. What's your feedback on this thing I'm doing? What can I do to make it better, for you guys, specifically?" You spend all your trime optimizing for people who aren't using your thing. Doesn't sound like a great use of time to me!

CassandraZeroCovid,
@CassandraZeroCovid@mastodon.social avatar

@objectinspace

To be clear - there are valid reasons for that.

objectinspace,

@CassandraZeroCovid Valid reasons for what? Blocking threads? Blocking Bluesky? Hating on the guy who made the bridge? Being generally irascible and change-resistant?

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@objectinspace @CassandraZeroCovid Who sounds irascible, now?

objectinspace,

@geos @CassandraZeroCovid Oh for sure me, 100%%. I didn't say there weren't valid defense for any of these, I'm just not sure which point of discussion to engage on.
