@evan I was a delegate at a leadership convention in 2003, in Toronto. It's a perfectly legitimate process, and a lot of fun for party activists as well as the media.

But in the case you're thinking of, I think the real issue is not that pundits want an exciting convention, it's that they want a candidate with a higher likelihood of victory.

@tlariv Seriously. I don't get why the chattering classes spend so much time imagining a way to get to a brokered convention. It might be just the boredom of slogging through 18 months of presidential campaign coverage. Making up weird scenarios is a way to pass the time while the tedious but mostly predictable machinery of primary politics grinds away week after week.
