A weird artifact of anti-gamergate rhetoric that I hope eventually dies is "it's only censorship if it's from the government" which seems to a be a misunderstanding of "freedom of speech only applies to the federal government" which even still is a misunderstanding of the first amendment only applies to the government

It's very weird because censored/censorship has been used correctly, very publicly, for many decades

I choose to blame this on gamergate because even though it was anti-GG people who tend to make the mistake, the intentional misread seems to be an attempt to dunk on GGers

I've noticed humans have a general tendancy to make up weird completely fake rules, see also "don't sit too close to the TV" (not a thing), "don't eat before swimming" (???), and I'm sure this is just to make kids shut up but "it's illegal to have the lights on in the car while driving" (not true)

I love the idea they just put lights in the car that are illegal to use 99% of the time. Some Orwell shit

@SirTapTap when parents dont feel like explaining rationale just go "cuz I said so" right?

But sitting too close to the tv was from the CRT days that don't apply to modern monitors.

People were worried about cramps during swimming and you'd have a hard time getting out and exercise on a full stomach increases the likelihood of cramps. Swim with a buddy it should be ok.

Lights on in the car at night makes stuff outside of the car less visible. More applicable to people with poor eyesight.

@grumpasaurus "because I said so" is the right way to put it, but so kids stop asking lots of parents say "it's illegal" then nobody corrects this (because, well, you almost never need those lights anyway) and some people definitely think it's an actual law

@SirTapTap

Lights in the car at night indicate distracted driving, which IS illegal. The lights aren't.

Swimming and cramps is a real thing too. Just predates the normalcy of swimming pools where you just put your feet down if you're tired. Ever seen a floating swim dock? Usually about a quarter mile from shore. I've rescued swimmers myself off those things.

And CRTs literally emit x-rays, so yes, don't sit with your face right up to them.
