@theusasingers

Jesus once was asked by a crowd, "this blind man has lived his whole life blind, was it his sin or his parents' sins that caused his blindness" and Jesus told them in so many words, neither, he was blind so that you could witness me heal him, then he healed him.

If you take him at his word, Jesus only cares about eternity. Not your mortal life.

I'm begging you: stop using Jesus to promote progressive ideas. It just reinforces his use by conservatives as a political football.

Invented Narratives and the Outrage Industry

It took me several years to understand what I was seeing.

At first, I thought the problem was Twitter algorithms. I thought that was the explanation for why what I was calling rage-inducing simplifications spread like wildfire.

Great tip I learned a long time ago on the Internet.

If it makes you angry or triggers an emotional response, go corroborate it with three other sources.

Worst case, you find out it was outright false. Best case, you get further context of the problem that affected you. But no matter what you're getting different takes to different ends, and your brain will thank you for that.

Why do you think so many people are obsessed with murder?

Itty53,
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

There's a lot of interesting thoughts here but I'm gonna throw a tangent out just to highlight how weird murder is to our brains: video games. They often engage in what's called ludonarrative dissonance - when the narrative is ludicrous but the viewer expects it. TV shows do it a lot too.

You'll have characters go on murderous rampages of countless nameless baddies but suddenly they have enough emotion for a cut scene where one of their loved ones is killed. And we expect it.

lol, I just purchased an old game which has been released on Steam for the first time, which I know hasn't worked for some time due to a limit around not supporting multi core CPUs - I wanted to see how they got around it since the studio is closed.

How the publisher got around it - they use a cracked version of the game which has a fix added on, lol. I might write this up.

1 billion = 100,000* x 1,000,000
because Americans make up their fucking maths as they see fit.

so fuck american billionaires and their imaginary numbers

billionaires have no right to exist. tax the shit out of them. RETROACTIVELY.

(*Americans consider that a billion while 1 million millions is what a billion used to be. fuck this gringo math.)

Itty53,
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

@blogdiva

A billion is one thousand millions. Used to be that the English / UK word billion did mean "1 million millions". But that's largely not used in statistics anymore, just the American billion.

When we say billionaire we mean someone who has one thousand millions or more, not one million millions.

Yet harped on about them so much, ~40% of America to this day believes that there was voter fraud in the 2020 election.

We have internalised the maxim "there's no smoke without fire" and it's utter bollocks. I never want to hear that phrase again.

I still don't buy the "40% of Americans believe there was fraud" datum. Problem is their polling is awful and always has been. Why would this figure be accurate?

It isn't. Polling isn't for finding the beliefs of the many, it's for seeding them. Polls aren't about finding opinions, they're about manipulating them.

Self pay gas station pumps couldn’t accept payments in New Zealand yesterday because their code couldn’t handle February 29th, a leap day.

I feel like you have to go out of your way to have a bug like this in your system given standard date libraries.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/leap-year-glitch-broke-self-pay-pumps-across-new-zealand-for-over-10-hours/

Itty53,
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

@carnage4life

It's an intermittent problem that resolves itself within 24 hours every four years. Which is longer than the tenure of most developers at any given company.

When described like that, it's really easy to see why that happens a lot: There's zero incentive for them to fix those issues.

Coworker summed it up yesterday: every leap day problem ends the same way the following day, "dev: can't reproduce".

Itty53,
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

@coder4hire @carnage4life

For some industries it's imperative, sure, but a POS gas pump? Video game crashing? No one's gonna complain too hard, they'll just go somewhere else.

Vulnerabilities are built on this kind of laziness though, you're right. But the same rule applies to attackers. Why spend all your energy on a vuln that's only open 24 hours every four years? Target, timing, capacity for things to change in four years etc makes it unreasonable.

A weird artifact of anti-gamergate rhetoric that I hope eventually dies is "it's only censorship if it's from the government" which seems to a be a misunderstanding of "freedom of speech only applies to the federal government" which even still is a misunderstanding of the first amendment only applies to the government

It's very weird because censored/censorship has been used correctly, very publicly, for many decades

Lights in the car at night indicate distracted driving, which IS illegal. The lights aren't.

Swimming and cramps is a real thing too. Just predates the normalcy of swimming pools where you just put your feet down if you're tired. Ever seen a floating swim dock? Usually about a quarter mile from shore. I've rescued swimmers myself off those things.

Nifflas, to random

I've mentioned this on the other platform, but here are two games I'd really like to exist. They're sorta opposites. Both are for two players.

A: A competitive Tango dancing game, where both dancing partners are assassins trying to kill each other during the dance

B: A cooperative pro wrestling game, where neither player are trying to actually defeat the other, but just trying to put on a really good show for the audience, building suspense & creating payoffs

Itty53,
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

@Nifflas

Here's a thought for the tango game. Make it four players. Two on the floor who have to create a coordinated dance, scoring points from the crowd for their show, and two in the crowd the dancers can't easily distinguish who are trying to set up killing one of the dancers without getting caught.

If the dancers survive the time of the song, they earn points. If they don't the killers earn whatever the dancers had, less penalties for getting caught or seen. Then teams reverse. 4 rounds.
