If you need to resurrect any legitimate version of Sibelius notation software, Avid has your back!

:flan_stars: WHAT A LIFESAVER! :flan_smile:

https://secure.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/register/register.pl

And the fact that a FIFTEEN y/o piece of software runs trouble-free on modern Windows is just so valuable...

Unfortunately, much of my work needs to happen on proprietary software and backwards compatibility like this is a big reason I can't switch to an Apple ecosystem.

I've had a few conversations here about the immense power of the Yamaha CS-15D as a . For your perusal, here's an example from the brand new Doctor Body album Misalignment, released today on Bandcamp (streaming coming soon).

If you're a bass fanatic who wants a body shattering, mind melting bass experience, this synth will do it. (And how about that crazy ass bass line by @composergreg?!)

Experiencing some data loss that’s resulted in the loss of four novels, a big stack of art, and some songs. I’m going through the stages of grief and I’m astounded at the feelings I’m having. Don’t trust yourself to automate your backups. Make a manual backup right now.

I’ve recovered the first draft of three out of four novels, final renderings of most of the art, but none of the song demos. I’m very heartbroken.

composergreg,

@mykie

I'm so so so sorry. Unspeakably awful.

I experienced a similar loss last year and have still not recovered. But in time I was also able to see it as a chance to start again with new eyes.

Even as you grieve I hope you realize you grew from what you created and nothing can take that away. :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

This morning I'm taking a journey to try and get a modern wavetable polysynth to stand in as a surrogate for one of the best monosynths Moog ever produced.

Can I tame the 3rd Wave? Only one way to find out!

Can I enter the studio, write and sequence a short piece, record it, edit the video, AND take my pup for a walk on the snowy cabin trails... all in under 120 minutes?

Apparently so!

The result is this peaceful little winter cabin performance featuring the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, Yamaha CS-30, and others.

I wanna know if Akai's first synthesizer from 1984 can lead a pack of notoriously HUGE instruments.

And there's only one way to find out...

Let's push the Akai AX80 to its outer limits...

https://youtu.be/wvwmWdTh7B8?si=YYB5VcubsmEo5q_0

The AX80 is not an easy instrument to love, but has a STRONG personality. To find it, you'll have to push it to the outer limits of what the engine was built to do.

composergreg,

@kel @synths

Thanks, Kel! :flan_stars:

I'm gonna keep exploring and try it out in various musical contexts to see if I can coax some real-life musical magic from it.

More vids to come! :flan_smile:

Hot on the heels of my A3000 repair, I took on a more ambitious task... recapping the power supply on my MINT Akai AX80.

I was CAREFUL. Took my time... and... IT WORKED! :flan_laugh:

@synthdiy @synths

Upside down Akai AX80 power supply board with new capacitors.
Akai AX80 recapped power supply in place.
A hand playing the freshly recapped Akai AX80.

composergreg,

@moirearty @SubNeon @synths @synth_noises

Indeed. They're all simple projector mounts from amazon.

And thank you for the suggestion... I WILL plan do a write up/video showing how it all goes together.

The MTMs aren't ideal in some ways, but in a small space like this, I've found they do just fine. And the ease of mounting made it a no-brainer!

@DukeDuke @SubNeon @synths @synth_noises

composergreg,

@SusanHR @SubNeon @synths @synth_noises

Ditto everything @doktorlond mentioned.

Additionally, each instrument has limitations and a unique interface that changes the ways you might interact with it. This is especially true of the older instruments. (my oldest is from 1977) And finally, they were built with components that were often hand-picked by the makers.

All of this brings a lot of individual character to their sound!

composergreg,

@mxtthxw

Absolutely! It SO exciting...

Good luck with your setup - would love to see photos, updates, or music that comes out of your process...
