@danjac I am on Cloudflare. Works well for my use case.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@darth yeah switched to Cloudflare for my blog last night. A bit fiddly but was able to deploy with Eleventy.

@danjac I used 11ty first and there was some fiddling on Cloudflare, yes. However I switched to Hugo and that one is well implemented on Cloudflare. I’ve had no hiccups.

starbreaker,

@danjac This is why I've been using Nearlyfreespeech; I pay in advance, and if the account runs out the site just goes down until I deposit more money.

I should just get a VPS. Then I could tinker with Gopher, too.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@starbreaker yeah normally I use Hetzner for web applications; I was just looking for a convenient place for my static sites (personal blog etc).

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@starbreaker not heard of that service, will bear it in mind, thanks.

@danjac So at some point I WILL have to set up at least one VPS of mine and move everything to it. Sigh.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@lukem yeah, I'm in the middle of setting up Cloudflare (which has the worst UI known to man) as a stopgap but will probably end up on Hetzner.

I have just deleted my static sites on Netlify with immediate effect (they are all on Github & Eleventy so easy enough to move to another provider at some point soon).

If you run a static site on I advise you to do the same.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@danjac Uuugghhh. But I use useful netlify features. Ghhhhnnnn.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@sarajw Netlify has just joined AWS on my list of "only use on the company's dime".

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@danjac I don't think I have any payment info entered with netlify. What can they do, pull my site down if something happens? Fine!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@danjac Will just leave this bit nice and empty...

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@sarajw I don't know but I don't want to argue with a lawyer or collection agency on the matter.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@sarajw they can still send you a bill, even without any payment info.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@danjac True, but it looks like I then go to Reddit and/or Hacker News and then I'll get it waived - so I have a path lol

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@sarajw I'd rather not gamble my life savings on "trust me bro".

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@danjac yeah it's definitely unsettling...

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@danjac They sent us an unprompted $73 bill a few years ago for DjangoCon US because a dozen or so pull requests triggered a bunch of dev websites they decided to charge us for. No warning, and whatever the new feature was, it was entirely opt-out to trigger a bill. They forever lost my business after pulling that 💩

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@webology luckily it was "just" $73...

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@danjac I emailed them and closed the account. But ya, I know friends who said those orange website posts can be $200 or more.
