The random jukebox is being curious today, heavy, rock to electro. Now playing LFO's Advance, a serious classic of its time.

@remotevoices Thanks for reminding me. I'm just listening to it again now. Haven't heard it for years.

@Neverfadingwood i love that album particularly of their material, just something so particular in the sound of it.

@remotevoices My favourite is still the first single. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was the first techno single to reach the UK top 20. Pretty sure it was that or "Tricky Disco".

@Neverfadingwood never been much for the charts, so I miss these things. Even now, the amount of times I'll stumble over a band who are inexplicably popular and brother will explain it is because they get a lot of play on Radio 6.

@Neverfadingwood as an aside, have you come across Dave Hutchinson's Fractured Europe novels? Just reading the latest which starts in Poland, which I'm sure some of the others do as well, which made me think of you.

@remotevoices Actually, I know Dave Hutchinson, been an online friend of his for years. I must confess I still haven't read the Fractured Europe books, although I have them. I gather it's all coming true rather too quickly for his, and my, liking.

@Neverfadingwood well, there you go. There is definitely a pandemic aspect to the series and this 2022 addition manages to add anti-vaxxers. The series is a fascinating take on Europe which is atypical in that it doesn't dwell as much on the more predictable territories.

@remotevoices Thanks for the added impetus to getting me to read them. Perhaps I'll have time once I've finished my MA. I feel uncomfortable if I do recreational reading when I'm supposed to be working or studying.

remotevoices,
@remotevoices@mastodon.xyz avatar

@Neverfadingwood recreational reading is one of the big things that gets me through at the moment. Cut out clear times to shift my brain into something else before getting back to the rest of the slog.

Neverfadingwood,
@Neverfadingwood@lingo.lol avatar

@remotevoices That makes sense actually. I keep track of my working time quite strictly. After 6pm, max 6.30, except for very special occasions, my time is my own. But I'll have been reading intensively for 8-9 hours by that point, so I rarely feel like doing more. I'd rather be listening to music.

remotevoices,
@remotevoices@mastodon.xyz avatar

@Neverfadingwood aye, we need to balance as suits ourselves. I take half hour reading at lunch to make sure I'm at least not working. Read while I have dinner etc. I tend to listen to music at same time. So balances. I find I watch very little TV, which I know is what a lot of folk do after work.

Neverfadingwood,
@Neverfadingwood@lingo.lol avatar

@remotevoices Yes, exactly so. I haven't had a TV since 2009. Don't miss it in the slightest. To the point where I very rarely watch anything these days, and I have a whole external HDD with things I want to see, or want to see again, on it. I look maybe once a year. Otherwise music all the time.

@remotevoices 90/91 was really the only time I paid attention to the charts. Mainly because there were enough decent dance tracks to make it worth following. Orbital, 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald etc. And LFO and Tricky Disco.
