The left has this problem where we see something that allows us to feel smug and think somehow that's sufficient.

Fascists want to say smug nonsense to your face. Being able to say whatever they want with confidence, no matter how incoherent, while rubbing your face in it, is a demonstration of their power. And all they respect is power.
The moment the fascist shows up to the "interview" wearing a picture of you crying, you've already lost.
