lately #thunderbird is freezing at start.. very slow response, almost unusable UI. takes a while to get to normal behavior, and sometimes freezes completely (=have to kill process).
using just 14 imap accounts (in 4 different servers) with a few dozen filters, and ~10 RSS feed subscriptions.
also connected to cardav/caldav with a single nextcloud instance.
could be network related, but have noticed same behavior both with slow/fast network connections.

@thunderbird
any ideas? tweaks perhaps?

@getimiskon @uhuru Have you tried the steps in this Support article? It's a good place to start! https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems

@thunderbird wow, long article, but yes, i'll try steps there first. thanks!

step 1 :
latest version from distro (115.8.0)

step 2 (safe mode) :
still slow UI, somewhat improved response.. appearance: very ugly, and continues to be ugly after restarting in normal mode...

steps 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 don't apply. linux machine, no AV or FW running. no gmail account either.

today was a first for oom-killer killing

pc was powered off for the last 3 days. so 3 days since last open and thunderbird can't handle either one of :

  1. hundreds of new emails?
  2. 1GB of global-messages sqlite?
  3. 20-30 simultaneous network connections?
  4. 50-60 filters on hundreds of new emails?
  5. syncing >1day old emails/caldav/carddav/rss ?
  6. other?

last time, thunderbird sqlite vacuum helped a bit. but maybe its time to actively seek/test alternatives...

finally,
freezing was -probably- caused by several (~25) filters on a single account..
there were 3-4 obsolete filters and 1 filter was also conflicting with another. (been there for years - not updated since setup)

moved valid account filters server-side and disabled all from thunderbird, and now it behaves normally again.. no lag, freezes or oom-serial-killer...

btw, this account gets hundreds of messages each day.

@uhuru We're glad these steps seemed to have worked for you! Give us a heads up if the behavior comes back.
