What kind of camera do I need to read license plates in these conditions? The tesla is missing a front plate but the rear was never in focus. 2nd picture for comparison, I frequently find the worst encounters with drivers are even more blurry, not close enough to the camera for long enough, or too much speed differential to make out the whole plate. Automated ubiquitous should be the norm.

Oregon license plate 438HCU as the front wheels are right on top of a speed hump, the lights are pointed away as the driver is passing

@enobacon Your crappy Portland lighting is also a factor. But even on sunny days down here, I have some focus misses in my shots of stationary bike lane blockers. Maybe the next generation of cameras will do better.

@jef I wonder if I need 4-6 additional cameras with narrower lenses, so the wide-angle captures the general story but one or the other of the narrow ones gets a clean view of a plate. The headlights definitely mess with it, as the angle on the speed hump shows, there could be some advantage to higher mounting points. Having real-time plate recognition onboard and getting a notification when specific bad drivers show up would be 📸
