When this gets more attention than 3 millionaires lost on a vanity cruise I’ll think we live in a decent society. Until then…

@mrbadger42 The one is an ongoing story, with a still unknown outcome. It's has suspense, people are on the proverbial edge of their seats, wondering whether they're dead, and how they died.

The other is a tragedy that is past tense. It's obvious what happened. The story, or at least that chapter of it, is done.

If there were a boat full of migrants bobbing around the ocean, somehow unable to get to safety, with an element of suspense as to whether they'd make it; I think people would be paying attention.

@mrbadger42 the disproportionate attention is gross, but the migrant drownings are because of multiregional handwashing and politics, and thus difficult to understand and solve.

Also, the drownings have already happened, so nothing can be done for those victims.

But the missing sub offers a tantalising hope that a miracle might yet occur, with a inexorable timeline, and no complex issues to untangle.

There's also local bias, since so much English language news is US-centric
