🦊currently finding out that apparently most furries see their fursonas as like, a fun costume for roleplay and stuff because they think anthro characters are cute and not like, "I wish that was actually me I wish I had big pointy fox teeth and paws and claws and tail and pointy ears"

@roxy From my perspective roleplaying as my fursonas is going a step above just wishing I was them, and actually experiencing being them in a way that's meaningful to me, where the people around me acknowledging it makes it more real. And it's so weird to me that more people don't want to take that opportunity to do the same.

But at the same time I don't like treating it like it's particularly deep, though that might just be me finding anything spirituality-related off-putting, and I guess something can be important to me without treating it the way I see some other people treating it.

I'd still be Maffi if I were given the option, of course.

@NovaSquirrel @roxy I just wanna make it clear that it's not necessarily a spiritual thing, certainly not these days. Just literally like "actually I'd rather not be human, I'd feel much better in myself if I was some other thing".

@Foxxhoria @roxy Ah, I didn't know that changed over time. Maybe part of it is just hearing about it from people who feel strongly about it?

@NovaSquirrel @roxy Yeah perhaps. The impression I get was that there was a focus on spirituality ten or so years ago, when it was much newer and there was still a lot they perhaps didn't completely understand about themselves. I remember talk of "spirit animals" and such (clearly something they needed to grow past). But it seems as though in the time since, the discussion in that community must have shaken out what they were actually coming together on, and that was "feeling like a werewolf" (and any other kind of non-human). And similarly in the Otherkin community. And while those were always different, if associated, communities, they seem to have come so much closer together other over that same common ground for the terms to have become nearly interchangeable heh.

I'm certainly not privy to what was actually going on in those communities but that's the state that things seem to have reached these days yeah.
And, I'm sure you'll still see the occasional curmudgeonly holdover.
