Anyone know why there are suddenly a bunch of articles about EV sales slowing down? Like, data seems good? https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61344

@ZachWeinersmith Can’t find the article atm, but IIRC there’s a fair bit of evidence this is car companies that DIDN’T invest in EV putting out a coordinated misinformation campaign.

(We were looking into EVs very seriously earlier this year… ended up deciding no, but mainly because we’re in an underdeveloped rural area and need to make several road trips a year that are out of current EV range. In five years yes! If we lived more urban yes! This year, no.)

@katfeete @ZachWeinersmith
are there any EVs with easily swappable batteries yet? I wonder if it would be possible to “range extend” such an EV by carrying an extra battery pack.

@oblomov
Typical EV battery packs weigh like 900lbs I think. Would be hard to just carry an extra one around.

uh, that's way more than I assumed. OK, forget my idea 8-D

@ZachWeinersmith I don't think we should say "data are", semantically I think "data" is uncountable, and so it should be "data is". I think the problem with saying "data are" and assuming they're countable is that we never see a singular datum, nor even refer to a singular datum.

@ZachWeinersmith car dealers skew Republican and profit from repair services EVs need less, so I think there’s a marketing group or too shopping those stories around to reporters.

Another factor seems to be greed at the manufacturers: they wanted to push highly-profitable luxury SUVs and trucks to continue the fat margins but buyers aren’t flush with cash and 1% loans so dealers are getting stuck with unsold inventory. Everyone I know who’s bought has said affordable models were back ordered.

@ZachWeinersmith The percentage of people who both can afford an EV and an EV is more convenient is saturating. Growth is coming from the slower growth of infrastructure and more diverse models.

@ZachWeinersmith In addition to what everyone else wrote: it's fun being a contrarian.

@ZachWeinersmith Politics.

EV sales are doing great. They're just not growing AS MUCH as manufacturers/stock holders thought they would. This is mostly due to Manufacturers putting out expensive 40k+ vehicles (most closer to 60k+) which most people can't justify or afford over a 20k gas/hybrid. Despite that, sales are doing great, just not as much as predicted because there are very few lower cost options.

No-one in the establishment -- including oil and gas industry, legacy auto industry, franchise dealers -- wants EVs sales skyrocketing right now. It's not a good narrative for them. Legacy automakers are not ready for increased EV demand because they don't have EV supply because, there's a lack of batteries and because, well, they hate EVs.

The graphs tell a different story, but graphs don't have PR people and lobbyists to spin/gaslight a desired narrative 🙂
