https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/17/the-impact-of-screen-time-on-parent-child-relationships here’s my letter to the Guardian. They removed the link to the study that shows that parents have little choice.

@CatherineFlick Great letter - it caught my attention when I was reading the paper this morning.

Did you already post the link to that study here? I couldn't see it in the thread.

@underlap when I’m back at my PC I’ll link it for you :)

@CatherineFlick really lovely letter. I wish more people could be as concise, well argued and empathic as you! Many people knowingly make suboptimal choices due to circumstance and we shouldn't judge them for it. I saw a recent discussion smugly dismissing people buying cheap goods as stupid. Maybe they know it's cheap but can't afford the better option. In Tory Britain 2024 we are all just out here trying to live our lives with what we have.

@jamesravey Hear hear! And thank you!

Great stuff @CatherineFlick, thanks for writing and sharing. A decade ago I used to get annoyed with parents giving kids screens to keep them quiet. These days it's how we stay sane.

As @jamesravey says "In Tory Britain 2024 we are all just out here trying to live our lives with what we have."

@dajb @jamesravey we aren't regular screen-givers so it's always a big novelty when they do get it. We generally take colouring in, puzzles or books to e.g. restaurants, but our kids (4.5,1.5) are happy with those and I know kids who are definitely not, so I never judge people who give their kids screens. Life is hard, don't need to make them harder for the sake of judgemental people who don't know what it's like.

@CatherineFlick Ran across your letter to the Guardian in the print edition this morning: reading along I was struck by how well reasoned and empathetic it was. Got to the end to see your name and ... of course it was all of those things! Thanks for your contribution to the discourse there, and here.

@alancheilek aw thanks! That’s such a kind thing to say. The original letter really ground my gears! >:(

@CatherineFlick lovely contrast with the letter under it, the smugness of which is now making greasy stains on my iPad cover here on the other side of the North Sea
