So, researching the story of the somewhat bizare story of 5 1/4 still being used on San Francisco trains:

Can any of you folks tell me if a floppy emulator would help here, like a GoTek, is such a thing possible for 5 1/4” disks?

Boosts appreciated!

@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jsbilsbrough ok but 5 1/4" floppies were already legacy in 1998 so they're trying to upgrade a technology from the 80s that was installed in the 90s?

Bikes overtake cars as means of transport in Paris https://www.thelocal.fr/20240412/bikes-overtake-cars-as-means-of-transport-in-paris

Forget "We are not Amsterdam", it is "but we are not Paris", now...

@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ZeKik @kim_harding this is due to 2 things:

  1. Paris has a widespread public transport network that is convenient, frequent and cheap(ish)*,
  2. There is no concept of zoning in Paris (or any city in Europe): every part of town has a mix of offices, shops and residential buildings, which means you can genuinely live within a 10 minute walk of your office and your grocery store.

*The main issue with the Paris metro network is accessibility, it reaches everywhere but not everyone.

@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Lassielmr @ZeKik @kim_harding yes but that doesn't change the fact that it's not accessible.

That said, the London tube, which is the oldest and largest in Europe, has a lot of escalators and lifts with some fully accessible stations. The Paris metro just doesn't.

I don't want it.

@KaraLG84 I got the same a few weeks ago on Windows 11. I've never disabled anything faster! There are good tips online on how to do this because of course it's not obvious.

@christineburns nope, we've run out of châteaux. Some derelict farmhouses are left but for how long?

I unironically learned much of what I knew about eclipses from Bugs Bunny. So any really incorrect things I still believe about eclipses, probably comes from this cartoon. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Bugs Bunny: Release me, or I will blot out the sun!

(Content warning: old cartoons were racist as hell! And sexist, ableist, and xenophobic).

@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@mekkaokereke as a French person, I got my knowledge from Tintin: https://www.tintin.com/en/albums/prisoners-of-the-sun#
Same content warnings apply, the worst part being the eclipse scene itself: considering it occurs in Inca territory, the local priest would know what's happening and would not be fooled by the theatrics of foreign visitors trying to frighten him with their "superior" knowledge.

You know what, sod “tracking all the contributions and dependencies”, that way lies shit ideas like “blockchains for paying musician royalties”.

Let’s have a Universal Basic Donation system for open source maintainers. We donate to a central place, and any open source maintainer of a project that’s used by more than X other people/projects can sign up to get a share. Everyone gets the same.

@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@instantiator @Floppy this sounds like means testing to me and it would probably result in unproductive discussions about who "deserves" to be on the list. If it's to be universal, the checks should be minimal and easily verifiable by anyone, such as: does it have an open source license? Is it actively being worked on?

This weekend the Christian world celebrates Easter, so our thoughts naturally turn to Easter Island 🗿 a remote territory of Chile 🇨🇱 in the Pacific.

That led to this month's question: name countries/territories (places with ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes) named after Biblical references.
