What is a human to a microbe in my gut?

What is a hand to an osteocyte in my finger?

What is an eye to a photoreceptor?

Each of these goes through the motions of their functions, never rising to the contextual capacity to perceive the larger whole.

And what has kept me awake at night for a long time is:

What is the whole that I belong to? Why do we crave belonging? Why do we feel sick down to our souls when we are alone, excluded, cut off?

God help me, I think cultures are superorganisms.
