Is there a course on how to create a small server farm, data center powered by solar?

Not talking about self-hosting here, but rather on how to create and assemble a team for building a small business of selling compute, storage

triangulum,

@impactology Check out Low Tech Magazine. It’s really interesting stuff. Their server is powered by solar and they have articles about it (among other interesting things).

Here is an article detailing the tech:

@triangulum yes I'm a big fan of their work

@impactology what scale and what context? cause what you're looking at is two systems the: data center and it's power supply. and you just need to scale the power to match the compute requirements

@mensrea think of the smallest possible unit for a community, so an apartment complex or a small neighborhood.

@impactology these folk seem to be trying to build that ~ https://www.liquidstar.io/. i don't think a course exists for what you're asking but you could be better off making a list of the service you want (document & file storage, community email/social network, mesh network, internet bridge, ...) for how many people & look for training resources for each bit. because each instance is going to have it's own needs, some might even be well served with something like Canonical’s Orange Box from 2014

@mensrea wow liquidstar looks great

@mensrea End goal is to support indie one person or small startups in the area, for people to be able to get out of their soul sucking jobs and launch their own services, products

@impactology an idea for the project: a solar powered internet cafe as a community hub and local ISP with a wifi mesh network that has a local and open source suite of services to replace google stuff. so the whole community can connect and use the local network for free with any wifi enabled device. and get out to the internet for what ever fee is needed in that situation

@impactology AFAIK no, but that really isn't that different from scaling up a homelab. Probably a good place to start a discussion about this would be https://slrpnk.net/c/selfhosting

@kris Thanks!

@impactology I imagine the folks will have to say something about this

@moritz_negwer @impactology I don't know one myself, but between https://www.appropedia.org/Welcome_to_Appropedia and the https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/ someone should know :)
