@warthog9 Best way to do that is to not buy from them...

Also the dying one is a liftmaster which is one of their brands. It's only 17 years old, so it has no good excuse to be dead yet.

As far as I can tell, Genie isn't owned by Chamberlain. Looks like I can buy a Genie and add OpenGarage if I want to ensmarten it.

@mcdanlj @warthog9 mine is a geenie. their app is.. eh not great. The native HA integration with that app is likewise... it needs reauth at the most inconvenient times

@fenruspdx @warthog9 Yeah, I bought the model without WiFi so that I'm not dependent on a corporate attention span, which I interpret as renting the device for a few years... $180 and doesn't look too hard to install. The biggest problem will probably be competing with schoolwork for my son's time to help install! Looks like the WiFi-enabled version of the same mechanism is about another $100, whereas OpenGarage is $50.

@mcdanlj buy an #OpenGarage and flash #ESPHome onto it.

Quick + easy (USB serial interface for flashing). Guaranteed to work with the newer S2 openers too, just buy the "adapter" (relay is a garage remote).

@stu Ah, I have OpenSprinkler already, so OpenGarage appeals as an upgrade choice if I want to ensmartify later.

And there is a non-wifi Genie on sale at Lowes now. This seems like a sane choice.
