alexhall,

I don't think my state is doing the NLS braille displays yet, but when/if they do, can the displays be used with computers? I'm starting to think I can deal with 20 cells if it means quiet operation, no wires, and a modern device I don't have to worry about. I still have my MPower, but it seems not to like my serial adapter on Windows 11. I also have my 40 cell from 1998, but I was never able to get that to work, not even directly through BrlTTY on Windows 10.

alexhall,

I'm told that connecting to other computers is possible, but doing so via bluetooth is very unreliable. The build quality is also quite bad, according to a couple first-hand users. That's too bad. I guess it's back to old stuff, or pondering if the noise of the Orbit 40 has been reduced and is now manageable.

jackf723,

@alexhall If your state does Humanware, then you're in luck. The Zoomax is the one to watch out for, so if that's the one your state carries, you're SOL.

Bri,

@jackf723 @alexhall In my experience, I have the Humanware model, and it's just as shit just in different ways.

jpellis2008,

@Bri @jackf723 @alexhall Doesn't the humanware at least work with NVDA? Zoomax works with jaws USB only.

Bri,

@jpellis2008 @jackf723 @alexhall Yeah... About 5% of the time.

jpellis2008,

@Bri @jackf723 @alexhall Oh wow. I only did a short test with it. It really is unfortunate as my wife wanted it to use with NVDA and jaws with her laptop.

@jpellis2008 @Bri @jackf723 @alexhall Unfortunately, there also appears to be a JFW driver issue in that JFW will happily treat the Zoomax displays as 40 cell when they’re only 20. I have reported this to FS and was assured it would be fixed with the latest update, but if memory serves, it wasn’t mentioned in the release notes and I have not tested it yet.

Bri,

@NoahCarver @jpellis2008 @jackf723 @alexhall Rofl. So just, terrible displays all around. Nice!

@Bri @jpellis2008 @jackf723 @alexhall Wouldn’t say that. Sure, the Zoomax display isn’t my favorite, but it would be perfectly workable if software support for it wasn’t so lacking.

fireborn,

@NoahCarver @Bri @jpellis2008 @jackf723 @alexhall we don't even have these displays here. I don't understand how they can be so bad when other displays by the same companies, Humanware at least, are actually quite good.
