I was scrolling through YouTube and saw one of those "first reaction" videos for a guy listening to Stairway to Heaven.

I I could think of was, "you big liar." (I didn't actually watch it, it might be true, but come on)

All I'm saying is, the guy would have to either be quite young, or have lived a cloistered life to have not heard it unintentionally or unknowingly in a movie or something.

@montecook
I think that sitting and listening to a song can produce a very different reaction to hearing it incidentally.

In this case, a reaction I’d expect is “Oh it’s still going? … cool”

@montecook Thinking about, how often has that song actually been used in a movie or similar? I've heard they are pretty selective about use of their songs. Immigrant Song is used a bunch, but can't recall Stairway. (I'm sure it has, I just can't think of any offhand.)

Without either A) listening to a radio station that specifically plays older rock songs or B) had it on my own playlist, I'm not sure I've heard it at all in years. It's definitely not as "in the wild" as it was 20+ years ago.

@montecook just to put a perspective on this:

I have a notoriously shitty memory and won the whamageddon for three straight years because I didn't know how the song went until someone purposely told me. I have since forgotten how the song goes. They might not be lying at all. 😅

@montecook Maybe they grew up over the hills and far away, or was dazed and confused when they recorded the video. Clearly a communication breakdown somewhere.

@montecook I'm closing in on my 60th year. I don't think I've ever listened to Stairway to Heaven in its entirety. What can I say? I'm not a huge fan of the band. It's not been a priority.

@zdl Sure, not everyone's a Zeppelin fan, but how does a person get through life, at least in the US or the places heavily influenced by US culture, and not hear it on the radio, in movies, on tv, etc.

@montecook By not listening to radio, in my case.

I've heard snippets of the song here and there in movies, etc. but in those kinds of venues they rarely (ever?) play the whole thing. So I know the opening bit. I know the part where they get loud. And that's about it: the two parts that get used in movies and TV most times.

I have not, however, listened to it from beginning to end in a single sit-down. Ever.

@montecook @zdl Noone listens to the radio anymore, and Led Zep rarely lets their songs get used in movies or tv. I remember the song, sure, but I'm pretty certain the last time I actually heard it was in the 1990s.

@montecook Reaction videos are a guilty pleasure of mine. Obviously, there are those that are trying to make a quick buck. But, there are a surprising number that genuinely don't have the same experiences we have. Whether it's social, cultural, or other differences such as religion, they simply haven't heard the same music (or seen the same movies) that "we" have. These genuine reactions are sometimes quite touching and uplifting.

I always approach them with caution, however. 👍

@DM_Zeppelin I very much understand that we all have different tastes and experiences. But some things are so omnipresent that I don't know how you avoid them. I've never in my life sought out Dolly Pardon's music, but can I sing along to Nine to Five? Yes I can.

Back when the radio was a more significant part of life, you had to go out of your way to avoid hearing some songs, and I'd argue Stairway is one of them. Today, it's probably a lot easier to avoid what you don't particularly like.

@montecook Agreed. I've seen some that just didn't know that they'd heard it before, too. Music (and movies), it seems, are a whole new thing these days. 🤣

I meant to disrespect. I was just sharing my experience with them. The reactions can be quite fun, but there is always that touch of doubt.

@montecook I saw one of those in which the drummer listens a song for the first time and tries to follow along, and the track was: ENTER SANDMAN.
...
The guy was like 25~30yo. Like... It's statistically impossible !!
