@GrumblingGM@dice.camp

Living in Antwerp, Belgium. Native Dutch speaker but mainly posting in English. I also understand French and German and might boost such.

Almost forever Game Master. Mainly Old School Renaissance and Free League's Year Zero Engine.

Regularly running games at Outpost in Antwerp & Delierium in Lier; online via Foundry VTT.

PS: Grumbling is a play on Grognard / old school player. Not actually grumpy unless it's early morning and I haven't had my coffee yet.

I love and I especially love it's many adventures, but for a sci-fi horror game, there's not a lot of pure horror scenarios IMO. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of horrific and weird stuff in them, but I'd like to check out some "purer" horror adventures. What are your favorites so I may check them out?

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I bought a set of cosmic horror pamphlet adventures for Mothership recently but I forgot the name. Will need to check the box when I'm home tonight.

Okay. Got it. No one alive today has ever heard of Led Zeppelin. Can you all please stop @ing me over my little joke?

@montecook sorry lol. Fwiw I thought it was a fun convo to read.

I was scrolling through YouTube and saw one of those "first reaction" videos for a guy listening to Stairway to Heaven.

I I could think of was, "you big liar." (I didn't actually watch it, it might be true, but come on)

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@montecook @zdl Noone listens to the radio anymore, and Led Zep rarely lets their songs get used in movies or tv. I remember the song, sure, but I'm pretty certain the last time I actually heard it was in the 1990s.

@SJohnRoss It was just mentioned earlier today on our Discord and the first response was that is still the best Discworld TTRPG. @TheBeardedBelgian

Reading news about phone fraudsters preying on old people. Reminded of this one time when I needed to find out something about land ownership or tenant farming for some archaeological fieldwork. Called a landowner who turned out to be old and confused, and her husband was shouting at her in the background to hang up because I was clearly a phone fraudster.

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@mrundkvist To be fair I'd also be concerned if someone cold called me to ask about my land ownership. I hope you managed to figure it out in the end though.

Just curious, have you purchased anything from creators who've posted about their creations here on the ? Please boost for more visibility.

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I've bought a few small adventures I've learned about through Mastodon. But I have the feeling creators are afraid to share their new releases here as most won't even make a post that they got something cool made. It sucks that so many on the fediverse have this crappy idea that any kind of business whatsoever no matter how indie it is, is still by default bad.

@lowqualityfacts I genuinely never had a hangover from Tequila. Blackout to the point of borderline comatose, absolutely. But never that hangover feeling.

(5) A personal change you felt in your games this year:

I decided to give it a try to run online using only text, dice rollers and simple character sheets, no graphical VTT or anything.

It has some gameplay disadvantages compared to face 2 face play or even VTT with cam and voice; but as some people have very legit reasons to not want to use voice or video online, I've been able to introduce several people into TTRPGs who never were able to play before.

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@magicksRampage yeah. Pacing is absolutely a problem in our game also. We only play with up to three players max though, and quite a few sessions are even one player/one GM.

What's you favorite/best starting village/town/city in a published module/adventure/something else?

Trying to make a West marches campaign and trying to figure out what I should do for a starting town. Im currently reading through keep on the borderlands but that feels like a lot to keep track of, it’s really good so far tho. What should a town in a West marches campaign even have in it?

Against splitting RPGs into OSR, DIY, Indie, Story Games, etc. (campaignwiki.org)

Here I am arguing against the split into the various sub "camps" of current RPG culture. I used to believe in this divide, too, but now I'm convinced the differences are just talked up and don't really exist except as tags, not inherently better or worse than tags such as "solo", "rules lite", "gonzo" and all the other ways of...

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@kensanata @GrumblingGM Sorry. I wasn't sure what the best way was to use Lemm.ee and Mastodon, so I made an account on both, but I guess it's confusing if I'm using the same name and pic both places. :P Still learning how to Fediverse.

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@kensanata @GrumblingGM

Tough one. When I'm running CWN, an OSR Cyberpunk, I'm honestly more interested in posts from BX players (regardless of setting), rather than posts from Sprawl or Shadowrun players - who are playing Cyberpunk but with very different sensibilties. The BX posts can help me run the game while Sprawl posts at best can serve as setting inspiration, which I don't really need.

But it's probably useful to always specify additional tags beside just OSR or Indie.

Well there will probably be another wave of bird folks flocking to here soon. In a reply to somebody Elon mentioned that he's thinking of getting rid of the ability for people to block others.

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@peteramthor @Tim_Eagon I do agree that a block function is critical, but without careful privacy management it's like a bandaid on the stump of your arm after you lose your hand to a chainsaw.

If someone blocks you on Twitter you can literally click the incognito button right there in your browser and keep reading. Don't even need a secondary account or any advanced ban evasion tactics.

It still stops them from responding to you at least, but doesn't stop them from seeing you.

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@rivetgeek @peteramthor @Tim_Eagon That's what I mean with managing your privacy settings. Don't post public if you don't the whole world to see.

But then I wonder what exactly the difference is between mute and block, if all it really serves is to stop you from seeing what someone else posts.

English has two different terms for words that come into English from other languages. A 'calque' is translated from the source language. (E.g., flea market, beer garden, paper tiger) A 'loanword' is ported in its original form. (E.g., cafe, bazaar, kindergarten) Perhaps ironically, the word 'calque' is a loanword, while 'loanword' is a calque (from Ger. 'lehnwort').

GrumblingGM,
@GrumblingGM@dice.camp avatar

@trochee @wesdym I believe it's translated from the French marché aux puces?
