Weird it’s not a more mainstream idea to use a gamepad in creative software

  • Cheap mass market high precision device, 3D mice cost a fortune
  • Decades of ergonomics research went into them
  • You already own one
  • Many people developed incredible dexterity over it
  • Optimized to navigate 3D space

Beyond animated 3D space, it could have many other applications where analog input is desirable:

  • Musical expression (pitchbend / modwheel)
  • Scroll/rotate 2D space (pen tablet companion)
  • Timeline navigation
  • Digital puppetry for animation (using MIDI controllers for that has precedent)

It's not that those ideas have no precedent but that no mainstream creative software (except game engine) bundles it by default, so it remains the confines of weird nerds who enjoy modding their work environment with plugins

@woof I feel like with something like blender I still need the mouse for accuracy - the same way PC gamers have a better advantage in shooters than consoles. But as for a bunch of hot keys - holy butts that's a great idea.

@batichi Thinking of it only as an additional rather than main device

Doesn't help that i use like 50 different programs with 3D space navigation and among them have in total 60 different mouse navigation schemes

@woof And we're in the days where we have the ribbon now. I remember the before times where everything was just buried in menus in their entirety haha
