I discovered quite by accident right now that my bike picks up enough of an electrical charge to shock me (my inner thighs) when I ride it underneath the very high tension power lines that cross over the river bike path.

I want to come back with a multimeter one day and see how much voltage there actually is between me and my bike

@MLE_online I have seen photos floating around of a warning sign about this on a bike path! Yikes.

@vxo I need to find this picture

@MLE_online Took me a while to find a measured number. This source says the e field under your power line could be near 1500 volts per metre.

@samloonie that's a lotta volts!

@MLE_online I'm aware of people who would pay good money for that bike.

@mw1cgg Me too

@MLE_online It may very well be YOU picking up the charge, not the bike. :-)

Your DMM may not detect the voltage. An electrostatic voltmeter (SUPER-high input impedance) may be required.

@JohnS_AZ well, yes, maybe! but this previously happened to me when I was walking under those lines with an umbrella. In that case, I was on the ground which was wet, so I was probably grounded and I was holding the umbrella by its plastic handle and it shocked me when it touched my face.

@MLE_online we rented a house that was owned by an electrician. My office had only two outlets (very inconvenient).

One hot and sweaty day I had my aluminum MacBook on my lap and I was typing on my desktop keyboard when I felt a little prick on my finger. After some investigation, I was getting shocked by my aluminum iPod, charging from the PC.

My guess is each outlet was being supplied by a different 110 leg from the 220, and wired in a way that there was a potential between the grounds

@crazybutable you need a wet meatsack sticker!

@MLE_online you sent me some!

Heck if I could find them all in the mess that is my office but they’re in one of the piles next to my desk

@crazybutable Your story is similar to the genesis of those stickers. I was testing something on my scooter's battery pack on a hot summer day and set it on my lap to hold it. The terminals touched my sweaty thighs and I got a shock
