I just found out about a local plant shop whose owners have become completely deranged with fears about the Chinese Communist Party, and several yelp reviews of their store tell sales of being thrown out because the owners became suspicious that they were spies.

I want to make up shirts that say "C.C.P. -- California Commission on Plants" and go in there with a friend and start measuring their plants with calipers and taking notes in a notebook

@melanie what's the M for?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@rose_alibi I had no idea this was a thing with plant shops because I never shop at those places.

Maybe it's the same kind of thing that got so many wellness and yoga people into right wing conspiracies during the pandemic

@melanie I can pretty much guarantee that the average american who's afraid of communism doesn't have a clue that there are different branches of communist philosophy. Most of them think democratic socialism is the same as communism

Here in America, there's basically just one hair removal tool that actually uses a real laser that you can buy for home use. And it costs $300.

I just looked on AliExpress, and they have ones for $20. Reviews say they work, and that you can tell because there's a burning hair smell.

I'm pretty tempted to try one.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

Oh, and they come with laser safety goggles, lol. The American one does not because it's got some fancy circuitry that prevents it from working unless it's firmly pressed against your skin.

I don't think I would trust AliExpress laser safety goggles though.

@azonenberg I had one before and it was honestly annoying how protective the interlock was. It was extremely cautious in its operation.

@misternineham hmm, yes, maybe some kind of laser-based AR-15

I picked up that bike with the 3-speed hub the other day with plans to put the hub on my ebike, but now I'm thinking about putting it on my road bike instead.

Do I really need ten speeds on my road bike? Will three be enough? What if I combined the hub with the front derailleur (and a chain tensioner) to give myself six speeds?

Many questions to consider

@bhtooefr That's a pretty cool idea

I was at the grocery store last night and every checkout line was very backed up. A pair of women with an extremely full shopping cart got into the 15-items-or-less line and caused further delays by asking questions about the prices of many items, and having the wrong items for coupons they had (necessitating them going back to the aisles to get the right items).

The customer in front of me, who was buying a gallon of milk and a box of cereal got increasingly disgruntled over how long it was taking and started talking shit to the cashier for letting the women bring their giant order through the express line.

The cashier didn't really know what to say, so he was deflecting, and I felt bad for him. When he left to go get a bottle of alcohol from the locked liquor cases, the disgruntled customer turned to me and apologized for making a scene.

I told him it was fine, but he shouldn't be getting mad at the cashier because retail employees aren't really allowed to say anything to bad customers.

When the cashier came back, the disgruntled customer apologized to him several times, and said he knows he's just trying to do his job.

And then he started talking shit to the two women instead.

Honestly though, people who take giant orders through the express line deserve exile

@Ronguest We have self checkout here, too, but you are not allowed to use them to purchase alcohol, which I was

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@Ronguest It's against the law here, even with a cashier assisting

@masukomi I worked retail for a lot of years. I know what it's like!

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@crazybutable I think most people wouldn't judge you for being over unless it was egregiously over. If you have 20 things in a 15-items-or-less line and you don't cause unnecessary delays, i don't think people would care much.

I finally saw a Honda Motocompacto in the wild. A guy was riding it on the bike path. It was smaller than expected, but very cute.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@phil That would be fun. Also, why aren't they selling a modern car to accompany the motocompacto?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@FeralRobots The FWD would pretty much take care of it entirely, right? If the front wheel lifts up, you can't keep accelerating.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@caffetiel This is the motocompacto, the electric revival of the motocompo. Less cool than the original in terms of appearance, but still neat

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@caffetiel They look like they're about the same size as the wheels on the standup e-scooters.

I would like them a lot better if they came in colors like the original. I don't know why everything has to be white these days

Lettuce is such a weird looking cat, so my sister and I were trying to figure out what exactly makes her look so odd.

It's definitely something with her eyes, but also her ears point straight up too much.
