(j/k) But even highly educated societies can fall victim to the worst demagogic excess, because a conspiracy theory is ultimately an appeal to emotion, not reason; some of this happens in the reptile part of the brain, which is itself very resistant to reason, because that resistance was instictive and key to survival for our prehistoric ancestors.
