I have turned @wolfgangcramer 's headaches trying to find times of trains from Madrid to Badajoz into a blog post

No amount of investment in new lines or new trains can save railway companies from this - the firms need a change of attitude above all, because currently rail is failing on its own terms - blog post 👇

@jon @wolfgangcramer Thanks for that, I was planning on coming back from Lisbon to The Netherlands in May and now I need ot go back to planning.

@dmendsev @wolfgangcramer Via Vigo it’s very scenic. But slower. Or bus Faro - Sevilla?

kaspertron,

@jon @wolfgangcramer

In the rail travel forums I'm in there are people every day asking "Is this train sold out or are tickets not for sale yet?". For various companies in various countries. Pretty amazing that the rail companies are incapable of communicating this fairly basic information.

@kaspertron @jon I totally agree, and, once again, if highway works ever carried that level uncertainty (not even thinking about air travel), then there would be a public outcry across Europe.

The hardest part for me of all this is to avoid the perception (even among friends and colleagues) that low-carbon travel is something only nerds are able to do.

@wolfgangcramer @kaspertron sadly the answer to that is: it depends where you're going. France-Spain-Portugal is among the most annoying in that regard - ought to be fine, in reality is hellish.

@jon @wolfgangcramer I'd have to check what current situation might be, but for 20-odd years, at least, most people I know in Extremadura get the frequent coaches from Madrid. In the past trains ran at peculiar times relative to when people needed them.

The regional trains used to work on such odd timetables that commuting by rail between any of the 4 main cities (e.g, Caceres-Merida or Caceres-Plasencia) was impracticable. At least one couple I know maintain flats in two cities.

@SK53 @wolfgangcramer That doesn’t excuse Renfe dysfunction.

SK53,
@SK53@en.osm.town avatar

@jon @wolfgangcramer No, trying to make the point that historically the timetable has been dysfunctional in other ways. Perhaps to the extent that no-one now notices : I certainly didn't look at any rail options the last few times I travelled from Madrid.

@SK53 @wolfgangcramer they’ve just opened the first bit of high speed line towards Madrid! Now if ever people should reconsider - if Renfe were any good.
