@rolle I’d be less adamant about it if adds ads were less invasive and pervasive.

@rolle on my phone, I don’t have adblockers and just avoid sites that are overdoing ads, and don’t play games with intrusive ads (or pay to get rid of it if I really like the game and the price seems reasonable). I even skip on bonuses in games which you have to watch ads to get.
On my work laptop, I have installed some adblocker when I had to do some research that included browsing sites sinking in ads. I honestly don’t mind having some non-intrusive ads.
Moreover, I would gladly provide ad operators with some data about me just in order to see only relatable ads and not see the ads that irritate me for things I couldn’t care less about(like may I tell you my size please and you’ll never bother me with ads of goods that don’t come in that size?).
I used to check what data Google has on my interests and correct it where it got something wrong.
I have discovered previously good things I actually gladly use through the ads, so I do think that properly tailored ads can be a good experience for all the sides involved.
But I can’t help but notice that despite the fact everyone is collecting a shitton of my data, a lot of ads are ridiculously unrelatable, so it’s a waste both of their resources and my time and patience.

Basically, there are several things that are key points for the ads to be rather welcomed by me:

  1. Transparency: if the ads/ads provider is going to use my data, I’d like to be able to know which and how and where it’s shared
  2. Consent: don’t show me ads I didn’t agree to watch, and allow me to stop it when I feel like it
  3. Non-invasiveness. The ads shouldn’t be intrusive, shouldn’t interrupt my experience, shouldn’t be in the way, shouldn’t be unskipable
  4. The ads shouldn’t shamelessly eat up my resourses(battery life, traffic, etc)
  5. Commercial and political ads should be strictly separated, including the data they collect
  6. Any data stored should be depersonified for anyone outside. There shouldn’t be a way to other parties(including, but not limited, to government) to relate collected data to a particular person. It’s ok to share trends, it’s not ok to enable spying on particular people.
