@TodayInTwitter serves them right for remaining on “X” I guess?

@SimonCHulse Deleting your account and freeing your handle as a notable person would open you up to a world of impersonation.

@TodayInTwitter I suppose.

@SimonCHulse @TodayInTwitter one could also just stop paying?

@TodayInTwitter @SimonCHulse well those also don’t pay. Right?

So they can leave their account and don’t have to fear impersonation. Or do I miss something obvious?

@Hipska @SimonCHulse Say you have 5 million followers and delete your account. After 30 days, Twitter will free the handle, available for anyone to register it.

Someone comes and registers the handle for themselves. Then, they buy a checkmark for $8 and DM some random person saying “Hey, I’m Jane Doe and you’ve won $1 million. Send me your bitcoins.”

Even if you leave, you shouldn’t delete your account. (And everyone with over 5K “verified” followers will now have an unremovable checkmark.)

@TodayInTwitter @Hipska @SimonCHulse What if Twitter required you to post something once a week, or your account would be deleted and available for anyone to claim? Say, to argue that daily active users are through the roof?

It's Elon's service and Elon's rules. No one is obligated to be held hostage and play his game.

If the kind of scams you describe were to become widespread, Twitter would become an untrustworthy service, even for people who don't care about it right now. That's a win.

@wolfpld @Hipska @SimonCHulse I want Musk to fail and all, but if people are getting scammed out of their life savings on Twitter due to the incompetence of some rich asshole, it’s a bad thing.

@TodayInTwitter @SimonCHulse

i deleted my twitter account, with my real name, fully aware of the possibility of an impersonation attack

i'm not that important, but even if some low life troll impersonated me for laughs, i figure its just more reason for everyone to know that twitter is nothing but a dumpster full of vomit
