I was unaware that some people pronounced Nike like nyk without the E sound at the end. Like some people say Porsche without the E.

zachnfine,
@zachnfine@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Wow I’ve never heard it pronounced nyk, but I guess that’s a UK or Europe thing according to this: https://www.themirror.com/lifestyle/boss-confirms-correct-way-pronounce-227455

Greeks in YouTube comment threads say the goddess after whom the shoes are named should be pronounced more like “neekee” (in threads in which they dispute ‘neekay’ as a mistake).

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@zachnfine Yeah, the company always said NYkey, and I grew up in Eugene, a huge running town with a strong Nike presence while I lived there.

chrismclay,
@chrismclay@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Nike as in Bike, not Nike as in Bikie

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@chrismclay Incorrect in terms of accuracy

chrismclay,
@chrismclay@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf down under this is the pronunciation, even in their own stores. 🤷🏼‍♂️

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@chrismclay I’m surprised they don’t say ekin

muddie,
@muddie@mastodon.cloud avatar

@glennf No e sound at the end here in Australia.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@muddie Australia has an a at the end

@glennf Learned German when lived in Switzerland 5 years, saw how every letter is used. But when friend bought a 1969 Porsche 911 (in 1969) we all pronounced it without the “e” like it was a French word 🙂

bagder,
@bagder@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf bike, pike, mike, like and then ... nike

huitema,
@huitema@social.secret-wg.org avatar

@bagder @glennf I have a tendency to say it the same way as "athena nike" -- Neekay.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@huitema @bagder I grew up in Eugene, Oregon, so we knew how to say Nike the Nike way. But also took Greek history/art classes, so can honor the goddess with…er…somewhat closer pronunciation of her incarnation as victory.

steveportigal,
@steveportigal@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf so you say porsheeeee?

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@steveportigal poor-EEEEEEE-sch

uliwitness,
@uliwitness@chaos.social avatar

@glennf Here in Germany, most people pronounce it so it rhymes with Mike. You can tell who consumes a lot of US media by who pronounces it like Mikey. Or who is from Greece and properly pronounces it nee-kay.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@uliwitness But you do pronounce Adidas correctly

flargh,
@flargh@mastodon.social avatar

@uliwitness @glennf I remember when Apple previewed macOS Yosemite at WWDC, some of the German developers who were unfamiliar with U.S. place names pronounced it "Yo-sem-aight" which was…well, rather triggering for a person with the surname Cohen.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@flargh @uliwitness So, no mo’?

uliwitness,
@uliwitness@chaos.social avatar

@flargh @glennf OMG I never made that connection 🤦🏼‍♀️

Yeah, that seemed like the obvious English pronunciation until I learned from the announcement what it's really called. Similar to Arkansas …

flargh,
@flargh@mastodon.social avatar

@uliwitness @glennf In fairness, a lot of Americans can't pronounce native-derived place names correct either.

I live in Massachusetts, for example, and a lot of folks from other regions say "mass-a-too-sits." For some reason that mid-word digraph is challenging.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@flargh @uliwitness My late, beloved mother in law could not say Snohomish, the county in which she and my FIL lived when they relocated near us. She would say shnow-HOME-ish. (It’s just snow-HOME-ish.) But she grew up northern Pennsylvania and there was a lot of dialect of there. She said “hamburg” for hamburger, too

@flargh @uliwitness @glennf It always bothers me that Arguello street is pronounced ar-GWELL-o instead of the Spanish pronunciation.

fahrni,
@fahrni@curmudgeon.cafe avatar

@mikec415 @flargh @uliwitness @glennf When in lived in California’s San Joaquin Valley I passed a road name Conejo. Like your road most folks pronounced it like cone-joe. 🤣

flargh,
@flargh@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni @mikec415 @uliwitness @glennf Mmm, like that delicious an-joe tequila.

@uliwitness @flargh @glennf How someone pronounces Gough street is a good test whether they’re a tourist.

@flargh @glennf @mikec415 Dutch or English pronunciation of his name? 😹
