matt,

Hey NVDA power-users, how hard would it be to customize NVDA, via an add-on or otherwise, so that while browse mode is on, the Space key is passed through instead of simulating a click? I'm giving a talk tomorrow, and I'd like to use NVDA browse mode in Edge to check my place while going through my slides. But I have to press Space to advance through the slides.

matt,

Problem solved thanks to @tspivey pointing out a built-in NVDA command. No need to boost further. Thanks.

matt,

And yeah, I guess I was being lazy, not finding the answer myself. Or maybe the stress of traveling (to the conference where I'll be speaking tomorrow) got to me.

TheQuinbox,

@matt Nah, I don't think you were being lazy at all. The only reason I knew about this shortcut is because I hit it by mistake once, wondered what it did, then asked input help.

tspivey,

@matt Try NVDA+shift+space. That disables all the other browse mode shortcuts, you can still arrow around, but letters/space pass through.

matt,

@tspivey Is NVDA+Shift+Space part of some addon? It doesn't do anything in my NVDA 2024.1 install.

tspivey,

@matt It only works in browse mode, and is part of core.

matt,

@tspivey You sure that's not a gesture that you manually bound to that keystroke? I opened my slide deck, and with browse mode turned on, pressing Shift+NVDA+Space gave me no feedback, and after that, Space wasn't passed through.

matt,

@tspivey Oh mind, something is weird about my keyboard. Oh never mind, something is weird about my keyboard. Using input help, I figured out that the Space in Caps+Shift+Space doesn't always get through.

tspivey,

@matt I guess that's one of the key combinations your keyboard can't send. Try insert. I was going to suggest that next.

matt,

@tspivey It works intermittently. Should be good enough. Thanks.

@matt Does it have to be edge? If you can get access to PowerPoint desktop you can use page up and down. Plus a hotkey to quickly read speakers notes. I wouldn’t present without desktop PowerPoint.

matt,

@fastfinge Well I did my slides using a command-line utility that converts Markdown to HTML with JavaScript. But I guess I could still switch to PowerPoint.

@matt Ah never mind then. Thought you were in Google slides or something. I have the absolute luxury of a designer to help with my decks, so I’ve been able to just do everything in PowerPoint. If you don’t have help though, making slides that look acceptable in PowerPoint is a world of endless pain.
