Even if you don't upgrade to the new app, or upgrade your speaker firmware, the of the old app has now been degraded. Browsing Apple Music this morning, and all of the items are images without alt-text. FYI @podcast

I'm testing something in Theseus2000. I need IPv6 to test it properly, IPv6 isn't enabled on my network, I can't access my router to enable it, I don't know where the router is to get sighted help getting the admin panel details, and the VPN I was using that allows IPv6 is currently expired and I can't renew it.

@seedy @jaybird110127 Try Tailscale. It’s free and will give you internal IPv6 addressing.

And so it begins. Rusc and stingray, two services I use daily on are unavailable. I assume because the new app will only work with the three major streaming services. Already hearing that adding custom streaming urls will be forbidden after the upgrade. Goodbye to the dozens of those I have.

So it looks like we’ll need to do some advocacy next week. I’m not looking forward to it. But not because of advocating for my needs, or working with large companies. That doesn’t bother me. No, what bothers me is the interactions I will inevitably have with the people who are supposed to be my allies. At least one person will say it works fine and I’m a whiner who needs to shut up. Eight or nine will tell me it’s my fault for purchasing the product at all. Several will tell me that it’s unreasonable to expect a multi-million dollar company to make things accessible on release. I’m tired. Not tired of advocacy, but tired of the lack of support, respect, and community spirit amongst my fellow blind people. We saw it during the advocacy, and we’re going to experience it all over again

Um so this is a huge problem. I basically won't be able to use my Sonos system when the new app comes out because yes, it's that bad.

@simon @FluidEscence I have. No response.

Screen reader tip:

If you often have long-running operations in your terminal, don't want your screen reader to talk constantly while they're going but want to be notified when they finish, define the following alias (works for ZSH and Bash):

beep() {
$@
echo -e '\a'
}

And then execute your commands like:

beep python long_running_script.py

You can set your screen reader to quiet, and your terminal will beep once the command is done.

I also have a more advanced version of this that sends any error output to my phone via Telegram in case of failure.

@miki @johann Why not just shove the bell in your prompt?

So apparently #sonos is releasing a completely redesigned app in May. Has anyone heard anything about #accessibility? Do we know if any #screenreader users are in the beta program? #a11y

I don't use them, but just for fun, I decided to try and on . They both fail differently. First off, both require that you log out or authorization won't work. But if you log out then log in again while authorizing, they will. But at that point, will just crash. The error in the log says it's trying to do something with Pleroma that it doesn't implement. Tweesecake, on the other hand, pretends to work. It loads the messages and mentions buffers just fine. Then it adds exactly 160 items to the home buffer, all of them blank. If you leave it open, new items will stream into the home buffer. They, also, will be blank. I didn't expect either client to work; I just find the wildly differing failures amusing.

If you're looking for a decent web dashboard for basic server monitoring with pretty good (though not perfect) #screenreader #accessibility, I'm having good luck with: https://github.com/tariqbuilds/linux-dash #a11y

Hey techy folks: what’s the most webmail app that will work with arbitrary imap and smtp servers?

matt, to random

Hey NVDA power-users, how hard would it be to customize NVDA, via an add-on or otherwise, so that while browse mode is on, the Space key is passed through instead of simulating a click? I'm giving a talk tomorrow, and I'd like to use NVDA browse mode in Edge to check my place while going through my slides. But I have to press Space to advance through the slides.

@fastfinge@social.interfree.ca avatar

@matt Does it have to be edge? If you can get access to PowerPoint desktop you can use page up and down. Plus a hotkey to quickly read speakers notes. I wouldn’t present without desktop PowerPoint.

fastfinge,
@fastfinge@social.interfree.ca avatar

@matt Ah never mind then. Thought you were in Google slides or something. I have the absolute luxury of a designer to help with my decks, so I’ve been able to just do everything in PowerPoint. If you don’t have help though, making slides that look acceptable in PowerPoint is a world of endless pain.
