I will never vote for a politician who attacks the BoC for raising interest rates in the face of higher than 2% inflation rate.

The Bank of Canada has one job: keep inflation at 2%.

They only have one tool for the job: monetary policy, which includes the overnight lending rate.

Yelling at the Bank of Canada for interest rates is like yelling at a tree for having its leaves fall during autumn. They can't help it.

It's also the government's job to manage inflation rate, by keeping a close eye on the economy.

Several things that lead to inflation that we're seeing today:

  • high housing costs
  • supply-chain issues
  • uncontrolled immigration, even in the face of inflation

Inflation doesn't only mean more money in circulation; it also means market can't meet demand.

So combined with supply-chain issues, red tapes behind housing starts, and high immigration all lead to the inflation that we are seeing today.

Governments should have been on top of this.

@manlycoffee the Bank has the single goal of inflation targeting with the single tool of monetary policy because the federal govt. has set it up in exactly that way.

It can be setup to have different or additional goals, like targeting employment or housing. And it can be provided with different tools.

The Bank of Canada is 100% part of the govt. Elected govts. control it, even if they like to steer clear of directly meddling.

@manlycoffee monetary policy changes via setting the risk-free interest-rate floor in the debt markets...has different effects on different things. For some things, the interest rate makes them more expensive & less attractive.

It doesn't work great for housing. It adds costs to housing. But it doesn't make housing less necessary or attractive. Housing demand is resistant.

@johnefrancis

Yeah.

I definitely wish that monetary policies were more granular than just a broad, far-reaching floor on interest rates.

That said, I still think other orgs should be involved before the BoC starts amending its policies. Perhaps the OSFI can do something about it?

@manlycoffee there are all kinds of options. But people are kinda brainwashed into thinking the current system is good for them. It's the system put in place by and to benefit wealth.

The current balance of inflation, govt. spending, unemployment, taxation, media, politics....it's hard to argue the choices here are anything else but to benefit wealth. Just enough for everyone else to avoid them getting their heads chopped off...

Changing it is quite a project.

Speaking of housing, for a long time, people have been saying that real estate speculation is a good investing strategy.

Hell, people included their own primary residence as their investing strategy!

Why? Because a home will apparently outperform the US stock market in terms of total expected return.

Why no one thought that this is unsustainable is beyond me.

Speaking of supply-chain issues, China was struggling to meet demands during the pandemic.

While the rest of the world opened up and China was falling behind, Canada should have looked into bringing in more secondary markets into its borders. But nope, we are still dependent on China.

And as Tim Cook said, China is no longer the leader in cheap labour. Labour costs are similar to that of North American markets.

The real problem is that the raw knowledge in manufacturing is just not here in Canada.

We have lots of land for which we could develop manufacturing capacities, but we didn't.

Don't even get me started on the labour market.

There's literal slavery going on in Canada, and we're doing absolutely nothing about it.
