So what am I missing here? I use a US Apple ID, and the region is set to US, but I definitely live in the EU, isn’t that enough?

@rafa US Apple ID connected to a US card means you get US App Store.

rafa,
@rafa@mastodon.design avatar

@mariusz fair. But if I had a EU Apple ID connected to a EU card but lived in the US I would still not have access. Should go both ways 😅

@rafa how Apple does things is weird, what can I say.

@rafa you can't use the US Apple ID. Log in with an EU one, install it, then log out and back into the US one. It'll work

@viticci @rafa if this works, can anyone set up an EU Apple ID, install it and the log back into their old one from anywhere?

Like I used to have a US Apple ID for some apps meant years ago, I think all I had to do was set the region for the ID/Account to US at that time. Is it more complicated now?

rafa,
@rafa@mastodon.design avatar

@scrwd @viticci I believe that you’ll also have to physically be in a EU country.

leonoverweel,
@leonoverweel@mastodon.social avatar

@viticci @rafa is there any way to tell whether your Apple ID is a US one or an EU one?

rafa,
@rafa@mastodon.design avatar

@leonoverweel @viticci it used to be easier, but maybe you can tell by the payment method, it should match the country of the ID?

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@rafa Apple requires an EU Apple ID for it to work, right now, until the EU tells them otherwise

rafa,
@rafa@mastodon.design avatar

@stroughtonsmith ah, there it is! Thanks!

lvalenta,
@lvalenta@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @rafa EU cannot tell them otherwise. EU can only tell them about EU users.

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@lvalenta @rafa …this is an EU user. Apple has set up their 'compliance' in such a way as it denies certain EU users their legal rights. This may get them a hefty fine

lvalenta,
@lvalenta@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @rafa if you shop in US, you cannot expect being dealt within EU laws.

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@lvalenta @rafa stupid comment; that's not how laws work, but also this has nothing to do with the App Store or Apple ID. You install marketplaces from the browser. I shop from different countries all the time (including the US, and other places outside the EU), it doesn’t invalidate the laws of the country I live in

lvalenta,
@lvalenta@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @rafa what I claim is that laws in country you live in are irrelevant if you use US store. You also don’t get EU warranty if you buy something from US store.

rafa,
@rafa@mastodon.design avatar

@lvalenta @stroughtonsmith that’s fair but if that’s the logic than it should be consistent and go both ways — today a EU citizen, logged in to a EU store, when they are not physically in a EU country they lose access to Alt stores.

rafa,
@rafa@mastodon.design avatar

@lvalenta @stroughtonsmith but I’m in the EU, not in the US 😂
