@onepict they’re kind of both right. People complain about companies controlling stuff, but companies win by first listening to users and building something users want. Too many open source projects avoid enshitification by starting off and shitty (in a different way)
@onepict thank you for saying this. And also thank you for mentioning in some other thread today that for some people the decision to be on an instance that does not federate with Meta will be a more difficult one.
I feel nuance and empathy are missing a lot from this whole conversation. I also feel there is no single Obviously Correct Path for every single instance out there.
People should be able to make different decisions (within certain red lines), without calling each other names. 🙄
@rysiek I have 2 handles on the Internet. I've always tried to keep my professional context and personal separate.
I have a responsibility to engage in here as part of my project work. I want to engage in here to help FOSS in the best way I can. So I'm fortunate to be on an instance like chaos.social who will make that decision carefully.
But I'm also fortunate for my personal context to be on a fedipact instance with an admin who gets community as well.
@rysiek An admins primary responsibility after infrastructure is to look after their community.
That does include robust moderation. If you want people to come over here, you have a duty of care to them as well.
I think with the twitter migrations we will all get a feel for where we want to be and go. It is a case of buyer beware. But it's always been like that for online communities on the Internet, not just on here.
@rysiek I'm reminded of some of the fencing parties I used to go to at uni. The room was always spit into the fencers and non fencers, with a couple of us moving between both groups.
Just cos it's online doesn't make it different. Keeping your contexts separate is a good thing.
It's your choice. It always was. Just like coming to the Fediverse was a choice in the first place.
And it's important everyone who needs those options has them, again — without being called names, and without their admins being tarred and feathered, for that.
@rysiek I was very disappointed by the sudden defederation that happened.
I think it was a decision made in the heat of the moment and from a place of extreme dislike. As did some of the aftermath.
I hope that decisions like that don't happen again. But we must remember that we're only human. We all make mistakes and it is hard to unequivocally admit it.
But being an admin, that power is also a responsibility. It's a burden, but it's also a service.
