Damn. Reading Dennett was what got me interested in Philosophy again, after Plato’s bullshit, Kant’s opacity, and everybody trying to ignore Leibniz.
@cstross Indeed, although before he died he did help train an AI on his work so in some sense his consciousness lives on - a mildly amusing end note to his career. He had some good ideas, although I couldn't get my head around intuition pumps and illusionism seems like a bit of a philosophical cop-out for materialism but at least he had good arguments.
@cstross oh that's not what I'm saying, I refer to it more as an autobiographical agent - one trained on a person and that has been proven to give "just as good" answers (and of course Dennett was in on it so he must have had some interest around the potential of it - https://christiankromme.com/ai-mimics-philosopher-in-groundbreaking-test/). But in the end it's just repeating the works.
I work with LLMs every day, so I'm fully aware of their capabilities - I'm not suggesting it's Cold Lazarus 😅
