Today is also the 26th anniversary of Deep Impact. Sure, it lost the box office battle against Armageddon that year, but I have a soft spot for this film.

It’s definitely a better movie. Not a GOOD movie, but Armageddon is just an exploding pile of Michael Bay and Armageddon makes a thousand times as much sense, which is to say, 1% sense.

Sadly, Don’t Look Up is the most plausible in the genre.

One of the ideas I’ve been kicking around for the is promotion of small businesses by Fedizens. This includes tools, apps, and services, not all of which have to necessarily be super developer-focused.

If you’re interested in being featured on some kind of directory, or know of a really good candidate, let me know! I have a little list going already, but would love to actually turn it into something.

There are so many! Individual craftspeople, micropublishers, artists, boutique manufacturers…!

There’s real potential here. For people to end-run the army of middlemen destroying our world.

The Adobe Flash aesthetic should come back.

I’m not saying that Flash itself should come back, just the unique look and feel that made it great.

Say whatever you want about the underlying tech, Flash unleashed a lot of creativity.

That entire ability to program resolution-independent graphics for both live interaction and linear events was such a creative boon.

Technically, it’s possible with HTML5 and JavaScript, but there are no creative tools that really make it happen, and no Newgrounds to make it matter.

Decided to take a break from an extremely frustrating day of failing to really learn FreeCAD to chase around hiss and buzz in my ARP 2600.

Analog problems are at least on a gradient. I can probably filter or disguise most of the hiss and buzz I don’t want. That’s not the same as not being able to fucking rotate the fucking object.

so okay people were asking about my headcanon shit

I have a pointless amount of headcanon about this movie. Not the least of which being the IT crowd shutting down everything as fast as they can in order to get the situation under control, followed by slowly picking the pieces back up and putting shit back together.

And when they're doing that they find out that Computer has been fucked up for a while. Like, seriously for a while, and that's why there are big sections of the city which are broken and so on.

So. What was supposed to be happening?

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@moira @jonny
You’re one of the few people I’ve met who puts this movie (which I’ve seen a dozen times and really enjoy) in a category other than “silly 70s nonsense”.

It deserves the thought you put into it. It’s a thoughtful movie and was staggeringly popular at the time (like Planet of the Apes 10 years before). It’s one of those things that was popular at a time, and so is dismissed as a product of its time.

The soundtrack is 🔥 too.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@moira @jonny
I mean, your analysis and “headcanon” lines up well and with most interpretations of the film.

Like Zardoz, it has some paradigmatic hurdles that a viewer has to overcome, but that’s what happens when an experiment is viewed in retrospect.

It resulted in a huge cosplay boom (harder to dress as an ape) and I remember the Cool Big Kids playing Runner, a college campus LARP and wishing I was cool and old enough to join them.

I teach in an alt school in a poor, minority-majority New England city.

I get paid less than $12k/yr and have to supplement it with a Patreon.

The school’s budget is being cut by almost 20% this year.

Edit: if you want to help, this is my school: https://www.lighthouseholyoke.org/give/ Tell them I sent you.

@joeinwynnewood @housepanther Not a charter school, but not that dissimilar. We're technically part of the public school system (one of several, and also the least expensive bc we don't want to drain public funds), also individually accredited, also a "home schooling facility”.

By "alt school" I mean ”based in Piaget, Unschooling, Montessori, and other non-coercive philosophies.”

The city has gone hard on "school to prison pipeline" and we want students to be humans, not grist.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@joeinwynnewood @housepanther

The terrible fact is that, without a school like ours (heavily funded by full-paying students who subsidize the other students), the city shovels kids into prison. The state doesn't seem much interested in doing things other than wringing their hands about the poor minorities.

Friends, if Microsoft tries to squeeze you to buy a new computer to run version 11 when every new version of Windows gets worse and adds ads then please consider that more than 100 million people use Linux on their desktop computer, including people who make all sorts of projects with videos, illustrations, digital photographs, laser cuttings, animations, paper media, CAD, CAM, 3D printed stuff, circuit boards, etc.
Will it be exactly the same as Windows? No.
Can it be awesome? Yes.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@zleap @Jennifer @trevorflowers
I’ve gotten that question a lot. And I will suggest that you take a good look at the user hostility of open source software communities.

e.g. The biggest gap for me is page layout software. I’m a book designer. I’ve never received such contempt for feedback to software creators as when I tried to help Scribus approach professional grade.

Software that is ALMOST professional grade—where you have to fix the software instead of do your craft—is ruinously expensive.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@trevorflowers @Jennifer In any successful public-facing project, commercial or not, it’s usually someone’s job to be non-grumpy, patient, and helpful to people who are new, frustrated, or surprisingly knowledgeable.

If that’s not someone’s job (it’s mine in plugdata) then the project becomes defined by what grumpy people don’t feel like doing.

Hobby electronics is 80% dealing with the fact everything expects 5v and 5v batteries aren't really a thing, and 20% being told on forums that your question is wrong.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@jon @geordie 5V was just a standard for many years, including USB, but also predating it. In the quest to make electronics use less power, the standard dropped to 3.3V around the same time as LiPo became a thing.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

When did microcontrollers switch to 3v3? I thought IC logic had been all 5V until 20ish years ago.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@gsuberland @jon @geordie Huh! I’ve come across a disproportionate amount of 80s and 90s vintage 5V logic then.

JoshuaACNewman,
@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com avatar

@BRicker @gsuberland @jon @geordie Yeah, that’s what I understood, but I guess that shift started earlier than I thought?
