The intro video for the new all-electric Boston Dynamics Atlas uses the language of horror movies, particularly movies featuring a robot or doll, in the way the bot is shown unnaturally rising off the floor and rotating its body parts 365° to face the viewer.

Is BD rubbing it in our faces that they are building robots for the defense and police industries that will become instruments of terror?

Or are they oblivious to the connotations and just thought it looked cool?

@monkeyborg a part of me would love to see a robotic police force that could be rendered harmless with EM pulses. Which is also the reason I never understood how a robotic defense force would ever be viable?

@Mrfunkedude Generating an EMP large enough to do that kind of damage isn’t easy, and the robots could be hardened against them anyway.

@monkeyborg somehow I think EMP blasts would advance if robot police were to become the norm.

Do we currently have ANY technology that is impervious to EMP blasts? I mean ones that are open to a network. Not someone's cell phone in a Faraday cage.

I mean, I guess you could create shielding but then they'd have to be fully autonomous. I don't see anyone wanting to open THAT particular pandoras box.

I dunno. Obviously I'm no expert. 🤷

@monkeyborg I suspect the answer to this question is, "Yes."
