On this date in 1962, Seattle’s Space Needle opened for the World’s Fair! Sure, it’s cheesy Jetsons-esque, but it comes from an optimistic era when we Americans thought that the future was bright, instead of dystopian. From my coffee table book on the history of it, when first opened, it was the tallest man-made structure west of the Mississippi.
